Text (English translation)London: The lord king sent to his sheriffs and coroners of London his writ of close in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his sheriffs and coroners of London, greetings. We order you, firmly enjoining, that you cause the appeal, which Philip Bluet is making before you without our writ against John Aygnel and Pagan Chilterne about robbery and the breaking of our peace, to come before us on the morrow of the Ascension of the lord, wherever we will then be in England, with the attachment and all other corroborative evidence concerning that appeal. And you are to say to the aforesaid Philip that he is to be then before us there to thereupon bring his aforesaid appeal against the aforesaid John [and] Pagan, if he wishes. And you are to have there this writ. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 10th day of May in the fifth year of our reign. The response of the sheriffs and coroners follows in these words: We, John Rote and John Hende, sheriffs, and John Charneye, coroner of London, by virtue of the same writ have caused to come before you the appeal with all things concerning that, which Philip Bluet, within written, somehow made before us, just as is clear in the schedule attached to this writ. And also we have caused to forewarn the aforesaid Philip that he is to be before you at the day, contained within, just as that writ requires. The appeal, mention of which is made in the aforesaid writ, follows in these words: Philip Bluwet of Wall, esquire, came before John Rote and John Hende, sheriffs of London, and John Charneye, coroner of the same city, on Friday next after the feast of St John before the Latin Gate in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, and appealed John Aynel of the county of Hertfordshire and Pagan Chylterne of the same county, on account that the aforesaid John Aynel and Pagan, together with others unknown to the aforesaid Philip, on Saturday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of the aforesaid King Richard, feloniously entered at night the lodging of the same Philip at the manor of Moor in the parish of Rickmansworth in the county of Hertfordshire, and there broke into diverse chests, strong-boxes and hampers of the same Philip and feloniously took and carried away one small chest and one hamper with the charters and other muniments concerning the lands and tenements of the said Philip and Katherine his wife to the value of £20, found there enclosed in the same small chest and in the said one hamper, whereupon he appeals them. And he finds pledges to prosecute against the said felons, viz Maurice de Apdavit and John Madoke. The lord king also commanded to the sheriffs of London his writ of close in these words. Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to the sheriffs of London, greetings. We order you, firmly enjoining, that you cause to come John Aygnel and Pagan Chilterne, taken and detained in our goal of Newgate under your custody, as is it said, before us on the morrow of the Ascension of the lord, wherever we shall then be in England, with the reason of their takings, to answer there upon certain things, which will be explained to them then on our behalf, and to do further and receive what happens to be ordered then and there about them. And you are to have there this writ. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 10th day of May in the fifth year of our reign. The answer of the sheriff follows in these words. We, John Rote and John Hende, sheriffs of London, by virtue of the same writ have caused to come before you John Aygnel and Pagan Chilterne, within written, together with the reason of their takings, just as that writ requires. Which same John Aygnel and Pagan, having been so brought by the sheriffs, are committed to the marshal. And the aforesaid Philip comes in his own proper person and instantly appeals the aforesaid John Aygnel and Pagan, just as is declared above. And this he is ready to prove against them, just as the court, etc. And the aforesaid John Aygnel and Pagan in their own proper persons defend all the felony and whatever, etc. And they say that they are in no way guilty thereof. And as to this they put themselves upon the country. And the aforesaid Philip similarly. Therefore the jurors thereupon come before the lord king in 15 days from the day of Holy Trinity, wherever, etc, from the view of the manor of Moor, aforesaid, in the county of Hertfordshire, and who not, etc, to give judgement, etc, because both, etc. The same day is given to the aforesaid parties, etc. And the aforesaid John Aygnel and Pagan are committed to Robert Bracy, marshal, etc. Afterwards, namely in this same term, with the assent of the aforesaid Philip, the aforesaid John Aynel and Pagan are dismissed by the mainprise of William Swanlond, John Weston, Thomas Brakenburgh and Richard Crek, who mainprised him, to have him before the lord king at the aforesaid term, and so from day to day, until, etc. And the process thereof having been continued against the aforesaid John and Pagan, it is placed in respite before the lord king until 15 days from the day of St Michael then next following. At which day before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid John and Pagan by the aforesaid mainprise. And the aforesaid Philip, although solemnly called on the fourth day of the plea, did not come, nor did he bring his aforesaid appeal. Therefore he is to be taken and his aforesaid pledges are to be in mercy. And the aforesaid John and Pagan, as regards the suit of the same Philip, are to go thereupon without day, but as regards the suit of the lord king they instantly spoke separately as to how the wish to acquit themselves of the aforesaid felonies. Who say separately that they are in no way guilty thereof, and thereupon they put themselves upon the county. Therefore the jurors then come before the lord king in the octave of St Martin, wherever, etc, and who, etc, to give judgement, etc. And upon this John Batail, William Swanlond, Robert Curtebrigge and John Middelton came and mainprised for the aforesaid John Aynell and Pagan, to have their bodies before the lord king at the aforesaid term, etc. At which day before the lord king at Westminster there come the aforesaid John Aynell and Pagan by the aforesaid mainprise. And similarly the jurors come, who, having been elected, tried and sworn for this, say upon their oath that the aforesaid John Aynell and Pagan are in no way guilty of the aforesaid felonies, nor by these occasions have they withdrawn themselves. Therefore they are to go thereupon quit, etc.
