Text (English translation)Essex. Thomas Saycok of Boreham was attached to respond to John Sewale of Coggeshall along with John Rouleye of Great Easton, John Warde of Great Waltham, John Leverych of Fairstead junior, Adam Tournour of Great Waltham, Thomas Spereman of Maldon, John Stalworth, barber, William Saresson of Chelmsford, Thomas Gylle of Maldon, shipman and John Walssh of Bradwell on a plea that with force and arms he broke the houses of the same John and took and carried away goods and chattels worth £40, and other injuries and damages, against the peace. And the same John Sewale by Edmund Heryng his attorney complained that the aforesaid Thomas Saycok along with John Rouleye and others on Monday 10th June 1381 came with force and arms, namely swords, sticks and axes and broke the close and houses of the same John Sewale at Coggeshall, and took and carried away goods and chattels, namely woollen and linen cloths, silver pieces, maple bowls and brass pots, to the damage of 100 marks. Thomas comes himself and says he is not guilty and places himself on his country; jurors to come in octave of Trinity; Thomas mainprised to be in court then by Gilminus Mepeshale, John Facelon, John Skynnere and Nicholas Wylard of the county of Essex; on which day the sheriff does not send a writ; as formerly the sheriff is ordered to make him appear in the octave of St Michael - 24 men of the view [of frankpledge] of Coggeshall - Thomas mainprised once more; at which day the sheriff does not send a writ, so order repeated as before. Essex. Thomas Hardyng of Manningtree by his attorney appears against John Dawe of Manningtree, John Webbe of Manningtree, Robert Vyne, Richard atte Grove, William Verye, John Cole, William Smyth of Manningtree, John Rigelage, Robert Lucas, John Neweman, Thomas Saungile, John Leche, John Waggere, Matthew Freman, Geoffrey Cristien, Roger Clerk, William Wether, Walter Hulman, Roger atte Bern of Ramsey, William Oras, John Frend, John Alote junior, John Freysel, Thomas atte Stone, Walter Bole, Roger Herde, John atte Hache, Philip Coillour, Thomas Chaunterell and John Bacon of Ramsey. And they [the defendants] do not come. And the sheriff had been ordered that he should capture them etc. And the sheriff reports that they cannot be found and have nothing [by which to distrain them] ... Therefore, the sheriff is ordered as before to arrest them etc. ... And to have their bodies before the King's Bench in the quindene of Trinity ... Essex.
