Text (English translation)m. 7 Cambridge. Pleas held there before Hugo la Zouche and his associates, assigned by the king to punish and castigate the rebels and disturbers of the peace, on Saturday 3rd August 1381. Cambridge. The jury say that John Coggeshall of Haslingfield on Sunday 16th June 1381 feloniously broke into the houses of Roger de Harlaston, and stole barley, corn and other goods and chattels worth 100 s. And that he was a notorious rebel and common wrongdoer at the time of the rumour, in prejudice of the king. And that the same John on Saturday 15th June 1381, in Bridge Street in Cambridge, with many other unknown rebels, came with malice aforethought to the house of Roger son of Richard Blaunkgren, and sought to kill him, and he did not find him there, but immediately went to the church of St. Giles, Cambridge, and there assaulted the said Roger, and would have beheaded him if it had not been for the parishioners in the church at the same time preventing him. And upon this continuing in his malice, he went back to Roger's house to pull it down, when the wife of the said Roger, on her knees, offered him a fine for having his peace and favour, in contempt of the King and to the pernicious example of others. And the said John was arrested and came led by the sheriff, and was asked how he wished to answer to the aforesaid felonies and treasons, and he said that he was not guilty, and placed himself upon his country. And immediately on this matter a jury was formed from the neighbourhood and arrayed by the sheriff, and twelve jurors came, elected, tried and sworn to this purpose, and a proclamation was made as necessary, and the aforesaid Roger [son of Richard Blaunkgren], Richard Chaumberlayn of Cherry Hinton, John Page of Cambridge, Roger Coller of the same and other faithful men came before the justices on that day, on this side sworn to tell the truth, in that all that was testified to be true and done in their presence. And on this matter the jurors heard the aforesaid evidence and said upon their oath that the said John Coggeshal was guilty of all charges, and therefore the judges have decided that he should be drawn and hanged, and that his goods, chattels, lands and tenements should be forfeit to the king. (drawn, hanged and forfeit). And it was ordered to the king's escheator, namely Ralph atte Wyk, that he should diligently inquire into them and make execution on behalf of the king. And in the meantime the sheriff should inquire diligently into the manner in which the said escheator disposed of the goods, chattels, lands and tenements of the aforesaid John. And this was plainly certified before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381, on which day the aforesaid escheator gave no answer, but it was testified by the sheriff that the same escheator had seized the goods and chattels of the said John, but their value was unknown. Therefore the aforesaid escheator should respond to the king. Indictments enrolled which were taken before the aforesaid justices on Tuesday 16th July 1381 by the jurors recorded below. Cambridge. Likewise other inquisitions were taken at Cambridge on the oaths of John Blancpayn, Richard Fouk, John Marchal, Nicholas Pottere, John Nortun, John Berle, carter, John Maskerell, Simon Glover, John Barker, Thomas Lollewurth, William Burton and William Paunfloun, who say upon their oath that Thomas Forbour, Simon Hosier, Richard Asshwell, sergeant, John Russell, Henry Rande and John Apelton lately servant of Richard Ferour, on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June 1381, rode out to a society of wrongdoers at various places, and feloniously stole various goods and chattels from Thomas Haselden, John Cavendissh prior of the Hospital of Shingay, and other men. And that Richard Martyn of Cambridge was a principal leader and raiser of wrongdoers in Cambridge on the same Sunday, and feloniously conducted all of them to Cottenham to the house of Roger Harlaston. And that William Draper of Plott and Nuts Lane was likewise a common rebel against the mayor of Cambridge, namely, Edmund Redmedwe, and against the peace, and feloniously plundered his goods on the same day. [illegible note in margin] And that Robert Cartere, John Giboun junior (otherwise hanged for the same crime and others), John Deye of Willingham, John Russell, Henry Rande and Richard Ashwell, sergeant, on the same Sunday during parish mass entered the church of St Mary's, Cambridge, and feloniously broke into a chest there, and took 10 s. from John Giboun senior to leave that chest alone. And they say that Robert Asshwell, sergeant, on Sunday 16th June 1381 feloniously stole malt and other goods and chattels from the tenement of Roger Harlaston at Cambridge. And they say that Walter Paunfeld (remains in prison) and John Derabouth were similarly in the tenement of Roger Harlaston on the aforesaid day, and feloniously broke into his houses and took away his goods. And they say that Robert Assheby of Haslingfeld, butcher, and John Scot of Stapleford broke into the houses of Roger Harlaston in Cambridge on the aforesaid Sunday, and feloniously stole corn and malt, the value of which is unknown. And they rose treasonably against their allegiance. More overleaf on those indicted in the same inquisition.
