Item quod Walterus Coslere de Metyngham Ricardus filius Walteri Ricardus Coslere senior Petrus Garneys Iohannes Kyngeston de Denton Robertus Goneld de Regynghale webestere et Iohannes Franke de Medefeld venerunt cum predicto Iohanne Wrau et cum aliis ad dictum castrum et ibidem expoliaverunt et depredaverunt et abstulerunt bona et catalla videlicet vasa argenta et alia bona et catalla ad valenciam xx li. videlicet predicto die et anno. Item quod Edmundus Barbour de Beccles venit die mercurii proxima ante festum Nativitatis Sancte Iohannis Baptiste anno regni Regis Ricardi secundi quarto apud Beccles felonice interfecit et decollavit Galfridum de Southgate de Beccles. Item quod Willelmus Deye de Schadyngfeld die mercurii proxima ante festum Nativitatis Sancti Iohannis Baptiste anno regni Regis Ricardi secundi a conquestum quarto apud Wenaston domum Iohannes Mekylboy intravit et dictum Iohannes minatus est ad decollandum eum nisi fecerit ei finem et dictus Iohannes fecit ei finem de iiii marcis et dictus Willelmus fecit ductor de aliis malefactoribus.
Text (English translation)Blything - Suffolk, Inquisition held on behalf of the king John Wrau, lately parson of the church of Ringsfield, chief leader and congregator of a certain army of men, namely of five hundred by estimation in various areas, on Tuesday 18th June 1381 with the same John [Wraw] came Peter Bray and Robert Clerk of Hinderclay in the same army, and thus together proceeded to the castle of Mettingham and entered there, and came upon goods and chattels, namely gold and silver to the sum of £40, and plundered, stole and took away other goods and chattels such as jewels and armour, worth £40. Also that Walter Coslere of Mettingham, Richard son of Walter, Richard Coslere senior, Peter Garneys, John Kyngeston of Denton, Robert Goneld of Rickinghall, webster and John Franke of Metfield came with the aforesaid John Wrau and with others to the said castle and plundered and carried away goods and chattels, namely silver vases and other goods and chattels worth £20, on the aforesaid day and year. Also that Edmund Barbour of Beccles came on Wednesday 19th June 1381 to Beccles and feloniously killed and beheaded Geoffrey de Southgate of Beccles. Also that William Deye of Shadingfield on Wednesday 19th June 1381 came to Wenhaston and entered the house of John Mekylboy, and threatened the said John with beheading unless he paid a fine, and the said John paid him a fine of 4 marks, and the said William was a leader of other wrongdoers.
