Text (English translation)To the Council of our Lord the King it is shown by his poor lieges Robert Piers, John Somenor, William Chamberleyn, John Gernoun, John Langham, John Webbe, Robert Waleys and Godfrey Panyman that whereas one Thomas Hardyng has made malicious and untrue suggestions against them to the Council of our Lord the King and had purchased commissions to arrest their bodies from Chancery and whereas it is given explicitly by statute that nobody shall by arrested by suggestion without due process, therefore they humbly bessech the Council of our Lord the King to send a commission of the most worthy of the country to enquire if they are guilty of these said insinuations or not and to desist from arresting them while this enquiry is undertaken and that the said Robert Piers Johan Somenour and the others should give sureties before the justices of the peace of the county of Essex to be peaceable and to be obedient to the law.
General InformationThis petition forms part of a small group of documents returned to King's Bench by the Marshalsea of the Household comprising the examinations of John Glasene and Thomas Webbe (source no. 4084 in this database), a list of those compelled to rise in Manningtree (same names as in sourece no. 4084), the present petition, and a series of indictments against Somenour and the others.
