Text (English translation)[Thorpe Market] First court of Alice de Retysham after the burning of the court rolls [held] there on Wednesday next before the the feast of St Laurentius 5 Richard II (7 August 1381) [only four entries] Court held there on Friday next after the feast of St Martin in winter (15 November 1381) ... Seisin of 3 acres pof land with a share of a messuage which had been seized earlier into the hands of the lady because the court rolls and written evidence of the lady had been burnt during the time of the rumour whereby the lady does not have a custumar ... John Samwell has his land granted to hold at will of the lady for services and according to the custom [of the manor] [followed by 30 similar entries] Court held there on Wednesday next after St Laurentius 6 Ric II (13 August 1382) ... And [to answer] about all lands and tenements which Richard de Lose, John Arnald, John de Norton, William Tucke, John Doughty, Simon Dughty and Alice Atteyerd held of the lady in villenage because they did not receive the land out of the hands of the lady ofter the burning of the court rolls...
General InformationThe seven unfree tenants appear not to have retaken there tenements for several years after the rising. It is likely that they took part in the burning of the court rolls.
