Text (English translation)Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to the beloved to him Ralph Wyke, his escheator in the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, greetings. Wishing for certain causes to be made more certain upon the cause of the taking of all the lands and tenements, which were of Geoffrey Cobbe in the vills of Wimpole, Orwell, Croydon, Papworth, Harlton and Wrestlingworth, by you, as it is said, in our hands, and about the true yearly value of the same, we order you that you render us more certain thereof in our Chancery under your seal clearly and openly without delay, sending back this writ to us. Witnessed by me, myself, at the vill of St Albans on the 18th day of July in the fifth year of our reign. [Dorse]: The execution of this writ is clear in a certain schedule attached to this writ. Ralph Wyke, escheator of the lord king in the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, certifies to the chancellor of the lord king the cause of the taking of all the lands and tenements, which were of Geoffrey Cobbe within the aforesaid counties, and about the true yearly value, by virtue of a writ of the lord king, directed to the same escheator and attached to this schedule, just as he finds by a certain inquisition, taken before the aforesaid escheator at Wimpole on the 15th day of July from his office, that the aforesaid Geoffrey, traitor of the lord king, was exacted before Hugh la Zouche and his fellow justices of the lord king, [assigned] to keep the peace in the county of Cambridgeshire, and he did not appear but withdrew himself. Therefore, at the consideration and order of the aforesaid justices, the said escheator took all the lands and tenements of the said Geoffrey within his bailiwick into the hands of the said lord king. Of which, diverse lands and tenements with their appurtenances, which were of the said Geoffrey in Wimpole in the said county of Cambridgeshire, are worth per annum 100s according to the true value of the same. Item, in Orwell [lands], which are worth per annum 13s 4d. Item in Croydon [lands], which are worth per annum 100s. Item in Papworth [lands], which are worth per annum 116s 10d. Item, in Harlton [lands], which are worth per annum eight marks, and what the lands and tenements in Wrestlingworth are worth is not known by the said escheator, because Wrestlingworth is not in his bailiwick. And he furthers certifies to you that the lands and tenements, which were of the said Geoffrey in Arrington, in the aforesaid county, which are worth per annum according to the true value of the same 6s 8d, just as is found before the aforesaid escheator by the inquisition, above alleged, and not contained in the writ of the lord king. In testimony of which matter, to these presents the seal of the said escheator is attached.
