Text (English translation)Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to the beloved to him Nicholas fitz Richard, his escheator in the county of Hertfordshire, greetings. Whereas by an inquisition, taken by our late escheator in the aforesaid county from his office and returned in our Chancery, it was found that Thomas Skot of Little Hadham, who was convicted for a felony and treason, which he made, held on the day, on which he was convicted, one toft with a garden, 50 acres of land, four acres of meadow, eight acres of pasture and two acres of wood with appurtenances in the abovesaid vill, but what estate he had in the aforesaid tenements on the aforesaid day is not at all specified in the aforesaid inquisition. We order you, just as on other occasions, we have ordered you, that by the oath of upright and lawful men of your bailiwick, by whom the truth of the matter can be better known, you diligently inquire if the same Thomas was seised of the aforesaid tenements on the said day, on which he was so convicted, in his demesne as of fee, or what other estate he then had in the same, and how and in what way. And you are to send without delay the inquisition, thereupon clearly and openly made, to us into our Chancery under your seal and the seals of those, by whom it will have been made, and this writ. Witnessed by me, myself at Westminster on the 8th day of October in the 6th year of our reign. Lincoln. [Dorse]: The execution of this writ is clear in an inquisition attached to this writ. The answer of Nicholas fitz Richard, escheator of the lord king in the county of Hertfordshire. Inquisition, taken at Stortford before Nicholas fitz Richard, escheator of the lord king in the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire, on Sunday next before the feast of the apostles Simon and Jude in the sixth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, by virtue of a certain writ of the lord king, attached to this inquisition, by the oath of Richard Saman, William Arnold, Nicholas Beneyt, John ate Hoo, Thomas Roger, John Spicer, William Wyot, William Nene, John C...stance, John Howlet, Simon Breggeman and Thomas Benet. Who say upon their oath that Thomas Skot of Little Hadham, named in the said writ, was not seised in his demesne as of fee on the day, on which he was convicted, in one toft with a garden, 50 acres of land, four acres of meadow, eight acres of pasture and two acres of pasture and two acres of wood with appurtenances, contained in the said writ, in the abovesaid vill, nor did he have any estate or possession in the same except for a term of four years only from the demise of a certain Bartholomew Willeham of Ashwell. For they say that the said Bartholomew, a long time before the aforesaid Thomas was convicted for felony and treason, made upon the lord king, purchased from the aforesaid Thomas all the aforesaid toft with garden, lands, meadow, pasture and wood, named in the said writ, viz in the second year of the reign of the now lord king, to hold to the same Bartholomew, his heirs and assigns forever. For which same toft with garden, lands, meadows, pastures and woods, abovesaid, the same Bartholomew gave to the same Thomas 28 marks of silver. And afterwards the same Bartholomew, full seisin thereof having been had, granted to the same Thomas the aforesaid toft, land, meadow, pasture and wood for the term of four years, as is aforesaid, whose term is now elapsed. Without that that the same Thomas had any other estate or possession in the same, except in the abovesaid manner and form on the day, on which he was so convicted for the aforesaid felony, not ever afterwards in his life. In testimony of which matter, to this inquisition the aforesaid jurors have affixed their seals. Dated the place, day and year, abovesaid. [Inquisition] taken at Little Hadham in the county of Hertfordshire on the 10th day of August in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II before Robert Basset, [escheator] of the lord king in the aforesaid county, and John ?Cheval and John Welsche, controllers of the same escheator, by the oaths of John Smyth, ... Attewode, Robert Bernham, John ?Panfreyd, John Deye, John Whedye, John A..., Richard Smyth, Geoffrey Attehach, John Attehull the elder, John Attemoor, 'soutere', and John Whelere, sworn. Who say upon their oath that Thomas Skot of Little Hadham, who was convicted for felony and treason, made upon the lord king by the same Thomas, at St Albans on Thursday next before the feast of St Margaret the virgin in the abovesaid year there before the justices of the lord king, purchased one toft with a garden, 50 acres of land, four acres of meadow, eight acres of pasture, two acres of wood with appurtenances in the vill of Hadham, aforesaid, from a certain Thomas Deynes, to him and his heirs forever, in the 47th year of the reign of King Edward, grandfather of the now lord king, and continued his possession thereof until in the second year of the reign the now king, in which year ... ... aforesaid toft, garden, land, meadow, pasture and wood with appurtenances to a certain Bartholomew Willyam of Ashwell, to him and his heirs forever. And they say that afterwards the same Thomas Skot took of the said Bartholomew all the aforesaid toft, garden, land, meadow, pasture and wood with appurtenances and received and had the profits thereupon issuing until the day, on which he was convicted for the aforesaid felony and treason, by what title they do not know. And they say that the aforesaid toft with garden, land, meadow, pasture and wood with appurtenances are held of the bishop of Ely by diverse services, which they do not know. And they say that the aforesaid toft with garden is worth per annum 2s, and the 50 acres of land are worth per annum 4s 2d, and the four acres of meadow and 8 acres of pasture are worth per annum 16s, and the two acres of wood are worth per annum, as far as they can ..., 4s. And they say that they ?can be cut in every seventh year. In testimony of which matter, the seals of the jurors are affixed to this inquisition.
