Text (English translation)Escheator inquisition by Robert Loxle, escheator in the county of Sussex, held in Uckfield (Sussex), 29 July 1381 The jury presents that John atte Hoth senior of Maresfield, who has been beheaded because of insurrection and treason ('propter surreccionem et seducionem') had goods and chattels, namely 3 acres of land in Maresfield which he held of the duke of Lancaster for an annual rent of 9 1/2d plus services, valued at 12d. He also had 12 acres of land in the parish of Buxton ('Pokeston') which he held of the archbishop of Canterbury for an annual rent of 3s 2d plus services valued at 4s. Also the say that he had 2 bullocks ('boviculi') worth 13s 4d; one cow worth 8s; 2 one-year-old bullocks ('boviculi annuale') worth 4s; 6 hogs [pig or sheep in second year] worth 4s 6d, a bronze pot worth 18d; a bronze pan worth 8d. He also had corn ('bladum') growing on his land worth 8s. His land and goods and chattels are in the hands of his lords. The jury presents that John Mournour of Frant ('Fernth'), who has been beheaded for the above causes (insurrection and treason) had a cottage and 9 acres of land which he held of Thomas Salaman, knight, of his manor of Frant, for an annual rent of 6d and 1 autumn service, valued at 40d. He also had a horse worth 10s; a cow worth 8s; 4 two-year-old bullocks ('boviculi'), worth 16s (4s per head). He also had corn ('bladum') growing on his land worth 8s; a bronze pot, much worn-out, worth 8d. His land and goods and chattels are in the hands of his lord.
