Text (English translation)To the council of our sweetest lord the king show his poor lieges Robert Piers, John Somenor, William Chamberleyn, John Gernoun, John Langham, John Webbe, Robert Waleys and Godfrey Panyman that whereas one Thomas Hardyng has by malice made various suggestions against them to the council of our lord the king, claiming them to be true, and has purchased from the chancery commissions to arrest their bodies and whereas it is expressly stipulated that nobody should be arrested by suggestion without due process, wherefore they pray humbly to the said council of our [lord the] king to issue commissions to the most worthy men of the country to enquire if the are guilty or not of the said suggestions and to cease such arrests while the said Robert Piers, John Somenour and others give sureties to the justices of the peace of the county of Essex to be peaceful and obedient to the king.
General InformationThis petition was forwarded to King's Bench together with the confessions of Joh Glasene and John Webbe: see KB 27/485 rex mm. 5-5d. The commission of arrest to which this petition refers was issued to Harding, Thomas Sayvill, a sergeant of arms, and the Sheriff of Essex on 30 August 1381: CPR 1381-5, p. 77. Appended to this petition in the King's Bench Recorda file are a series of indictments against Piers, Somenour et al which were presumably taken by the commission issued in response to this petition but no such commission is recorded on the Patent Rolls: KB 145/3/5/1 (t).
