Text (English translation)Suffolk William de Benyngton was attached to answer to Robert Heth in a plea of why with force and arms he seized, imprisoned and ill-treated the same Robert at the town of St Edmunds, and held him in prison there until the same Robert had made fine with the aforesaid William in forty pounds to have his delivery, and other outrages etc. to the great harm etc., and against the present lord king's peace etc. Whereupon the same Robert, through Edward Herying his attorney, complains of him that he, on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the present lord king's reign, with force and arms, namely with swords etc., seized, imprisoned and ill-treated the same Robert at the town of St Edmunds, and held him in prison there until the same Robert had made fine with the aforesaid William in forty pounds to have his delivery, namely for one day and one night, and other outrages etc. to the great harm etc. and against the peace etc., concerning which he says that he is harmed and has damages to the value of a hundred pounds; and on this he brings suit etc. And the aforesaid William appears in person and defends the force and injury when etc. And whatever etc. And he says that he is in no way guilty of this. And on this he puts himself on the country. And the aforesaid Robert likewise. Therefore a jury is to be summoned on this before the lord king at the octave of Michaelmas wherever etc., and who do not etc., to investigate etc., because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties etc. Whereupon the same William puts in his place Stephen del Fall against the aforesaid Robert in the aforesaid plea etc. On which day the sheriff did not send a writ. Therefore the sheriff is ordered as before to have appear before the lord king one month after Michaelmas day wherever etc. twenty-four from the aforesaid neighbourhood, both knights and others etc., and who do not etc., to investigate etc., because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties etc. On which day the sheriff returns that he ordered Thomas de Moyaux, steward of the liberty of St Edmunds, who has the return of all writs and the executions of the same, who gave me (sic) no reply. Therefore the sheriff is ordered not to fail on account of the liberty of St Edmunds, but to have appear before the lord king at the octave of St Martin wherever etc. twenty-four both knights and other free and law-worthy etc., from the neigbourhood of the town of St Edmunds, and who do not etc. to investigate etc., because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties. On which day the sheriff did not send a writ. Therefore the sheriff is ordered as before not to fail etc., but to have appear before the lord king at the octave of St Hilary wherever etc., twenty-four, both knights and others etc., from the aforesaid neighbourhood etc., and who do not etc., to investigate etc., because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties etc. On which day the sheriff did not send a writ. Therefore as before the sheriff is ordered not to fail etc., but to have appear before the lord king fifteen days after Easter day wherever etc., twenty-four, both knights and others etc., from the aforesaid neighbourhood etc., and who do not etc., to investigate etc., because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties etc.
