Text (English translation)Suff' John Wrawe of Sudbury came before William Knyghtcote and Walter Doget sheriffs of the city of London and John Charneye coroner of the same city and confessed himself to be a traitor and felon of the Lord King concerning various treasons and felonies and appeals Thomas Munchesye of Edwardstone, esquire, Geoffrey Parfey vicar of the church of All Saints Sudbury, Thomas chaplain of the same Geoffrey, Adam Bray of the parish of All Saints Sudbury that in the absence of the said approver, they went to the town of Thetford in Norfolk on Friday 14 June. There they criminally and treasonably took and carried off from the mayor and chief burgesses of Thetford twenty marks of gold paid to save the town and threatened the mayor and burgesses that unless they handed over the said sum, John Wrawe would arrive with his band that same Friday to destroy and opress the mayor and chief burgesses and to bum down the town. Of these twenty marks received from the mayor and burgesses, Geoffrey Parfeye gave twenty shillings to the said Thomas Munchesy for his part, twenty shillings to the said Adam Bray and kept forty shillings for himself and his chaplain Thomas; but afterwards delivered the remainder, i.e. fourteen marks, to John Wrawe at Sudbury. Geoffrey then told Wrawe how he and his companions had taken the said gold. John Wrawe therefore received the said fourteen marks at Sudbury knowing that they had been taken treasonably and criminally, and so consented to these treasons and felonies. Which appeal the Lord King for various reasons made come before him to be determined. By which the sheriff was commanded to arrest them, etc. And now that is to say on Tuesday after the Three Weeks of St Michael in this term (21 October 1382) the said Thomas Munchesy, having been placed in exigent, surrendered to the prison of the marshalsea of the Lord King for the said reasons and was committed to the marshal. And he comes, led by the marshal. And because the said approver is now hanged, as appears by membrane 26 among the pleas of the king for Easter term in the fifth year of the present king, the said Thomas Munchesy is asked how he pleads and says he is not guilty and places himself on the country for better or worse. Therefore jurors are to come to King's Bench in the octaves of Hillary wheresoever etc. And in the meantime the said Thomas Munchesy is committed to the custody of Robert Bracy, the marshal.
