We have ordered you to have the body of John Kyrkton otherwise called Echard, arrested by you and held in our prison of Newgate in your keeping, as we have understood, under a safe and secure conduct together with the reason for his arrest and detention, before us at Westminster on this next Thursday, following three weeks after Michaelmas, to answer to us for various treasons and felonies with which he is charged. And you are to have this writ there. Witness R. Tresilian at Westminster, the twenty-first day of October in the sixth year of our reign. The endorsement of this writ is this: We John Sely and Adam Bamme, sheriffs of London, inform you that long before the arrival of this writ, that is at the time of the late insurrection, the John Kyrkton mentioned below was arrested and sent to the lord king's prison of Newgate for certain crimes perpetrated in the same insurrection by the same John Kirkton in the same city, as is said, for which the process and case remain for safekeeping in the possession of William Walleworth, then mayor of the said city and certain companions of his, the lord king's justices, but we will have the body of the same John Kyrkton ready before you as is ordered here. Which John Kyrkton is handed over to the marshal. Whereupon the aforesaid William Walleworth is ordered to send all indictments held before him touching the aforesaid John Kirkton in any way, together with the record and process held on them, under your (sic) seal, clearly and openly before the lord king without delay etc. that [he may] further etc. Afterwards, namely on the Tuesday on the feast of St Martin in this same term the aforesaid William Walleworth sent the indictments before the lord king in these words: Indictments held before William Walleworth, mayor of the city of London, and his companions, the lord king's justices, by virtue of the lord king's letters patent addressed to the same justices at Clerkenwell Street in the county of Middlesex, on the Friday before the feast of St Margaret the virgin in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest. And on the same Tuesday the aforesaid John Kyrkton appears before the lord king at Westminster, in the custody of the marshal. And he is asked how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies and treasons. He says that he is in no way guilty of them, and on this he puts himself on the country, for good and evil. Therefore a jury is to appear on this before the lord king at the octave of St Hilary wherever etc. And who etc., to investigate etc. And in the meantime the aforesaid John is delivered to prison in the custody of the marshal etc. Afterwards the process on this continues against the aforesaid John before the lord king, until fifteen days after Easter day then following.
