Text (English translation)London The lord king sent his beloved and faithful William Walleworth, lately mayor of the city of London, his writ close in these words: Richard by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful William Walleworth, lately mayor of the city of London, greetings. Because Stephen Soneday, who is held in our prison of the Marshalsea before us for certain felonies and treasons for which he was arrested before us, has been indicted before you and your companions, lately our justices appointed to chastise and punish any rebels who have risen up, and who have wished to rise up in future, in unlawful gatherings and assemblies against our peace and in disturbance of our people, both in the city of London and in the county of Middlesex, of various felonies and treasons, as we have understood, concerning which indictments it is expedient that we should be informed, we order you to send all indictments held before you touching the same Stephen in any way, under your seal, clearly and openly, with everything touching on them, before us on the morrow of St Martin wherever we then are in England, that we may further have done on this what is to be done rightly and according to the law and custom of our realm of England; together with this writ. Witness R. Tresilian at Westminster, the eighth day of November in the eighth year of our reign. The indictments mentioned in the aforesaid writ follow in these words: Indictments held in London before William Walworth, knight, and his companions, the lord king's justices specially appointed by the lord king's letters patent to enquire into the malefactors lately rising up against the lord king, on the Saturday on the feast of St Margaret the virgin, in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard the second, on the oath of Stephen Maynard, Henry Godchep, Roger Borre, John Sexy, John atte Felde, Richard Bernes, John Harengey, John Walssh, Thomas Kene, John Naylere, William Godehewe, Henry Cok, Henry Boseleye and Thomas Brompton, upright and law-worthy men of the visne of Farringdon within and without London, who say on their oath that Stephen Sonday, in the company of very many malefactors rising up in this way against the lord king on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard the second last, feloniously and treacherously, together with the aforesaid malefactors, was present at the burning of the manor lately belonging to Robert Hales, prior of St John of Jerusalem in England called Highbury in the county of Middlesex, and at the destruction of the houses of Stephen Maynard in West Smithfield in the suburb of London. And he likewise feloniously robbed William Salman of a hundred shillings there. From the records of the eighth year. On which morrow of St Martin the aforesaid Stephen Sonday appeared before the lord king at Westminster in the keeping of the marshal. And because in the present lord king's parliament held at Westminster on the morrow of All Souls in the fifth year of his reign, the same Stephen was excepted and utterly excluded from all grace made and granted by the same lord king to his people in the same parliament, the same Stephen is immediately asked how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies and treasons. He says that he is in no way guilty of them, and on this he puts himself on the country etc. Therefore a jury is to appear on this before the lord king at the octave of St Hilary wherever etc., and who etc., to investigate etc. And in the meantime the aforesaid Stephen is handed over to the marshal etc.
