Text (English translation)The abbot of St Benet of Hulme appeared through his attorney on the fourth day against Richard Crispyng of Catfield in a plea of trespass. And he does not appear, but a certain John Drake says that the present lord king has by his letters patent taken the aforesaid Richard, his men, lands, goods, rents and all his possessions into his protection and defence, wishing that the same Richard should be quit of all pleas and complaints, except for pleas of dower where he has nothing, and quare impedit, and assises of novel disseisin and darrein presentment, and attaints, and except for suits which should happen to be summoned before justices in eyre in their eyres. And he produces here in court the lord king's letters patent attesting to the aforesaid in these words: Richard by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to all his bailiffs and all his faithful to whom the present letters come, greetings. Know that we have taken into our protection and defence Richard Crispyng of Catfield in the county of Norfolk, who is about to leave for overseas in our service, with our beloved and faithful Henry de Beaumont, in the company of the venerable father in Christ Henry, bishop of Norwich, and the same Richard's men, lands, goods, rents and all his possessions. And therefore we order you to maintain, protect and defend the same Richard, his men, lands, goods, rents and all his possessions, not inflicting injury, annoyance, harm or harassment on them, or allowing such to be inflicted; and if anything is forfeit to them, you should have it put right for them without delay. In testimony of which thing, we have had these our letters patent made, to last for one year. We also wish that in the meantime the same Richard should be quit of all pleas and plaints, except for pleas of dowry in which he has nothing and quare impedit, and assizes of novel disseisin, and darrein presentment, and attaints, and except for suits which should happen to be summoned before our justices in eyre in their eyres. The present letters will not be valid if the same Richard should happen not to set out on that expedition or if he should afterwards return to England from the aforesaid parts within that term. Witness myself at Westminster, the twentieth day of May in the sixth year of our reign. By reason of these letters the aforesaid suit remains without day etc. Afterwards, namely on the fifteenth day of June in the seventh year of the present king's reign, the aforesaid abbot comes before the lord king at Westminster, and asks that the aforesaid suit might be revived etc., that it is granted to him etc. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to attach the aforesaid Richard again, to appear before the lord king at the octave of St John the Baptist wherever etc., so that the aforesaid suit should then be in the same state in which it was in at the octave of Holy Trinity in this same term, on which day it remained without day because of the aforesaid protection etc. On which day the aforesaid abbot appeared through his attorney and the sheriff did not send a writ. Therefore the sheriff is ordered as before to attach the aforesaid Richard again to appear before the lord king at the octave of Michaelmas wherever etc., so that the aforesaid suit should then be in the same state in which it was at the octave of Holy Trinity in this same term, on which day it remained without day because of the aforesaid protection etc.
