Text (English translation)[Hoveton] Court of William atte Moor held there on Thursday on the feast of St Peter Advincula 5 Richard II (1 August 1381) die jovis in festo St Petri Advincula at the time of the rising of the people The jurors by virtue of their office present that John Haukyn, one of the malefactors during the rising of the people, came with others to the dwelling of William atte Moor in Hoveton St John, called Bodhamyerd, namely on Tuesday next after the feast of St Botulph abbatis, 4 Ric II (18 June 1381) [illegible] and they broke and carried away and they also broke and dragged down a house called 'le Logge' against the peace of the king. And that Richardus Br..., Stephen Spendelove, Walter Crowegate, Henry ... mynour de Has..., William Levy, Nicholas Leye, Thomas Berny[?], William Gullys of Tunstead, Geoffrey Maltester, Henry Porchet, William Shefeld, Thomas, son of John Haukyn, William Elly, John Wake, Peter Miller did the same; and that Richard de Boton took timber at Bodhamyerd and carried it away ...; and that John Smyth, bond tenant of the lord William atte Moor did the same as all the others aforesaid did; and Richard de Ashmanagh, John Sparker of Wymondham, Richard Pye, Adam Johan, smith [?], did the same; and that Thomas Wolwyn broke the dove-house and took/released? the doves; and that William Swyft, Richard Towngate who now lives in the house of Henry Dawnes did the same ... The jurors present that Nicholas de Orford has been killed at North Walsham during the time of the rising and he died in possession of 1 1/2 rood of unfree land of the tenement (called) 'Clevehous'. And that Alice his his nearest heir and that she is 7 years old. Therefore it is ordered to seize the property until etc. And that the said Nicholas died in possession of 1/2 acre of free land which he recently bought from William atte Moor ... seized into the lord's hands. [several tenements confiscated, including the one of John Smyth snd Stephen Spendelove, bond tenant ]
General InformationHoveton St John was a manor of the abbey of St Benet-atte-Holm; in the 1370s and 1380s it was farmed by William atte Moor.
