Text (English translation)Continuation of the pleas held on the above day. Cambridge. Robert de Lynton of Horseheath and John Golofre of Linton, otherwise arrested on suspicion of insurrection at the time of the disturbance and rumour, and because they were seen in the society of John Hanchach, leader of wrongdoers, at the manor of the Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England at Duxford and the house of John Sybile at Horseheath, whilst many wrongdoings with destruction of houses, were done in that place by the aforesaid John Hanchach and his company, namely on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June. And on this they remained separately questioned and diligently examined, and they say separately that being at the aforesaid place at that time it was imposed upon them that they were coerced by force by the aforesaid John Hanchach and others unknown, and led in fear of their lives, otherwise they would not have committed these wrongs. And they will be able to inquire into this as aforesaid. And it was investigated in the proper manner by various inquisitions in these parts and no wrongs committed by them are proven. But they are of good reputation and character. And a proclamation is made as necessary, and no-one comes. Thus they withdraw acquitted, and pledges come separately: Michael Cok, John Russell of Fowlmere, Henry Smyth and Henry atte Chambre. And the same Robert and John are sworn to the peace as required. (Acquitted). Simon, vicar of Mildenhall, otherwise arrested by Henry English, sheriff of Cambridgeshire, on suspicion of insurrection during the time of the rumour and disturbance, and at the complaint of Ralph atte Wyk, king's escheator in the aforesaid county, for the reason that [Simon], with many other malefactors by him congregated and arrayed in a warlike manner, on Friday 14th June 1381, came to the house of the aforesaid Ralph at Newmarket in the county of Cambridgeshire, and insulted him, and threatened him with beheading, and destruction of his dwelling, if he did not deliver up to him the daughter of Ralph de Walsham at Mildenhall, lately abducted by others and alleged to have been received by Ralph atte Wyke, as the aforesaid Simon the vicar asserted, and of which accusation the same Ralph atte Wyke is not guilty. And the aforesaid vicar continued in his malicious and iniquitous purpose until the same Ralph and his friends paid him a fine to stand in his favour, to the great injury of Ralph, his wife and family, and manifest affright and disturbance of the whole town, and in contempt of the King's peace. And [Simon] remains under custody of the sheriff. Inquisition taken at Cambridge on the oath of John Curteys, John Pipere, Henry atte Feld, John Colvyle, John Sharp, Nicholas Potton, John Watte, John Cayly, John Smyth, John Coupere, John Hadelee, and Ralph Watten, who say upon their oath that on Saturday 15th June 1381 at about 10 o'clock at night, Richard Martyn, John Barbour, taverner, Robert Brigham, John Deye of Willingham, Thomas Forbour, John Russell and Richard Asshwell, sergeant, along with other wrongdoers, came to the house of William Bedell in Cambridge, broke into, and entered, the said house, and destroyed, or feloniously took away various goods found therein. Also they say that on the same day, at about 11 o'clock at night, Richard Asshwell, Simon Hosier and Thomas Forbour, came with other wrongdoers to the College of Corpus Christi, broke into and entered their close, and destroyed or took away the goods and chattels found therein, and also feloniously broke the doors and windows. Also they say that on Sunday 16th June 1381 John Reffham, Thomas Litster and John his son procured John Hanchach and other wrongdoers to lay waste the houses of John Blauncpayn. And that on the same day, Simon Hosier, John Derabouth, Walter Goldsmyth, Thomas Baxster and John Dene sold and took away the goods of Roger Harleston. And that on Friday 14th June 1381 John Forbour rode into the country, and was at the death of the Lord John Cavendish. Also that on Saturday 15th June 1381, Henry Rande, John Apelton, blacksmith, John Russell and John son of Richard atte Hatch, cutler, rode out to John Hanchach and other wrongdoers at Steeple Morden and at Shingay, and from these towns feloniously took away a chalice, vestments and other clothes for beds, and horses. Also they say that on Monday 17th June 1381, Simon Hosier, John Russell, John Noreys, Thomas Forbour, Thomas Litster, John his son and John Fulburn', skinner, along with other wrongdoers, against the will of the mayor and other faithful men, went to Bernwell, broke into the prior's close, and laid waste and carried away his trees. And those indicted above are not captured except William Goldsmyth, also called Walter Paunfeld, who remains in the custody of the sheriff. And the others indicted aforesaid do not appear. Therefore it is ordered to the sheriff to arrest the aforesaid Richard Martyn, John Barbour, taverner, Robert Brigham, John Deye of Willingham, Thomas Forbour, John Russell, Richard Asshwell, sergeant, Simon Hosiere, John Reeffham, Thomas Litstere, John his son, John Derabouth, Thomas Baxstere, John Dene, Henry Rande, John Apelton, blacksmith, John son of Richard atte Hatch, cutler, John Norice, John Fulburn, skinner, and they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 3rd August 1381 to answer to the king on the charges. On which day the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Richard Martyn and others are not found in his jurisdiction. Therefore as before it is ordered to the sheriff to arrest them, and they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to answer to the king. And that in the meantime the sheriff is to diligently inquire into the lands, tenements, goods and chattels those indicated hold jointly or severally and to seize them into the king's hand, and this to be done openly and certified according to the aforesaid terms. On which day the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Richard Martyn and others named above are not found in his jurisdiction. Therefore in the inquiry into and seizing of his lands, tenements, goods and chattels as ordered above, it is returned that Ralph atte Wyk, king's escheator, before his recovery was ordered, seized the same under supervision of and counter-rolled by Simon de Burgh by virtue of the king's writ as necessary sent to him just as at present he is able to ascertain. And nothing of itself further than this has been done at the time of the writ. And the same Richard Martyn and all others indicted above are summoned with due process and do not appear. Thus it is ordered to the sheriff that writs of exigent and capias be issued against them from county to county, and unless they appear, they are to be outlawed. And they are to appear before the aforesaid justices at Cambridge on Wednesday 9th January 1382 to answer to the king on the charges. And the aforesaid sheriff has a writ of exigent.
