| Text (English translation) | Middlesex: The jurors of diverse hundreds of the aforesaid county at another time, namely in the term of Holy Trinity in the fifth year of the reign of the now king, before the lord king at Westminster, presented that John Plot of London, brewer, on Thursday on the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of the now king, came to the house of Roger Leget in Holborn feloniously and traitorously, and to the house of Andrew Brewere, and to the manor of the Savoy, and to the manor of Clerkenwell, together with other wrongdoers, and feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid manors and houses against the peace of the now lord king. And that the aforesaid John was one of the principal men, who rose up against the lord king in the county of Middlesex, and was the first, who agreed to behead Robert de Hales, prior of St John of Jerusalem in England, etc. By which the sheriff was ordered that he should not omit, etc, from taking him, if, etc. And now, namely on Tuesday next after the feast of St Barnabas the apostle in this same term, before the lord king at Westminster, there came the aforesaid John Plot, and afterwards he was placed in exigence and handed himself over to the prison of the marshal of the lord king by the aforesaid occasion, who is committed to the marshal. And immediately having been brought by the marshal, he came and produced a certain writ of the lord king of close, directed to the justices here in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful Robert Tresilian and his fellows, our justices, assigned to hold pleas before us, greetings. Whereas, out of our special grace and at the entreaty of the communities of our realm of England, and with the assent of the prelates, dukes, earls and barons of the same realm in our last Parliament, assembled at Westminster on Monday in the octave of St Michael last past, we pardoned and remised to all and singular our subjects and inhabitants of the realm, of whatever status, grade or condition they may be, excepting all those, whose names, at another time in our Parliaments in the fifth and sixth years of our reign, were delivered to be excepted from all grace then made by us, as if, namely, the principal starters, abettors and procurers of the insurrection that had lately arisen within our aforesaid realm traitorously, whereof they are charged, and also three other persons, citizens of London, who in our said last Parliament were also especially charged of certain articles of treason, made in the said insurrection, and all others being fully in the same case of the said three citizens or of any one of the same men, and also all and singular persons of the vill of Bury St Edmunds similarly excepted, the suit of our peace and whatever pertains to us or could pertain, for all kinds of treasons and felonies, howsoever made or perpetrated in the said insurrection between the first day of May in the fourth year of our reign and the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist then next following, whereof they are indicted, charged or appealed, and also outlawries, if any have been published against them or any one of them by these occasions, and we have thereupon granted our firm peace to them and to each one of them. In such a way that they are to stand trial in our court, if anyone wishes to speak against them, or any one of them, about the premises or any of the premises, just as is more fully contained in the statute thereupon issued. We command you that you do not trouble or harm in any way John Plot of London, brewer, if he is not one of the persons, whose names were delivered in our aforesaid Parliaments to be excepted from all grace made by us, as is aforesaid, contrary to the tenor of our aforesaid grace and the form of the same remise and pardon. Witnessed by me at Westminster on the 10th day of May in the sixth year of our reign. By pretext of which writ, the roll of names, which were so excepted in the said Parliament, having been seen and delivered here in court, on account that the same John Plot is not contained in the said roll among the names so excepted, it is considered that the same John Plot, as regards the aforesaid felonies and treasons, by virtue of the aforesaid grace and remise, should go thereupon without day, etc. [Margin]: Without day. |
