Text (English translation)Court pleas, Wednesday after Lucas the evangelist, 8 Oct 1381 [In the margins] Investigation between the bailiffs and William atte Appleton in the custody of the serjeants. Investigation held between the bailiffs and William atte Appelton by oath of Robert atte Forde, Gilbert Burgeyes, John Lucas, Semanus Clerk, Michael Aubre, John Vero, John Glovere, John Freysel, Thomas Sadeler, John Cove, John Pakkard, skinner, and John Masoun who say upon their oaths that the aforesaid William atte Apelton, on Sunday, 16 June 1381, entered with force and arms the Moot Hall of Colchester and the treasury in the same hall and took away the rolls and muniments of the said town with force and arms and (the help of) others, so that the courts of the aforesaid town of Colchester ceased for five weeks from then on, whereof in this matter he was accused (and) put under investigation, to the grave damage of the whole community of Colchester and in prejudice and against the lord's peace. Therefore, it has been agreed by the bailiffs that the aforesaid William should be put in prison, in the custody of the serjeants, until etc. [In the margin] Fine half a mark [6s 8d]. William atte Appelton (pays) a fine for him to be released from prison by pledge of Thomas Gogger, tiler, and John Bishop.
