Text (English translation)Suffolk. Thomas Gamen of Bury and John Sutton of Stanton were attached to answer Gilbert Nichole on a plea that they, together with John Wryghte of West Stow and Robert Westbroun, with force and arms, broke the close and houses of the said Gilbert at Bury, and they assaulted the said Gilbert there, and beat, wounded and ill-treated him, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there to the value of £40, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said Gilbert, and against the King's peace. And whence the same Gilbert complains through Roger Bagg, his attorney, that Thomas and John Sutton, together with etc, on Friday 14 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close and houses of the aforesaid Gilbert at Bury, and assaulted the said Gilbert there, and beat, wounded and ill-treated him, and they took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely bronze and wooden vessels, ginger, saffron, cloves and other diverse spices and also linen and woollen cloths to the value etc, and other enormities etc to the grave damage etc and against the King's peace etc. Whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £100. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid Thomas and John Sutton came through Thomas Ewell, their attorney. And hereupon the bailiffs of the liberty of Saint Edmund appeared and thenceforth begged their liberty in that plea. And that the liberty was granted here by a writ of the lord King, just as appears in the second term of Michael, rot. 451, therefore they have their liberty in that plea. And the same bailiffs set a day for the aforesaid parties in the town of Saint Edmund on Monday 21 December 1383. And it is said to the same bailiffs that they should deliver swift justice thenceforth to the parties aforesaid, otherwise return etc. The same Gilbert appeared through his attorney aforesaid against the aforesaid John Wryghte and Robert, together with the aforesaid Thomas and John de Sutton of the aforesaid plea. And, just as before, the sheriff was ordered to arrest them etc. And the sheriff reports that they cannot be found etc. Therefore, as repeatedly before, the sheriff is ordered to arrest them and produce them here at the quindene of Hilary 1384 etc.
