Et inde producit sectam etc. Et predicti Ricardus et Nicholaus in propriis personis suis venerunt. Et defenderunt vim et iniuriam quando etc et petunt licentiam inde loquendi etc. Et postea iidem Ricardus et Nicholaus venerunt parati hic ad barram inde respondere etc. Et predictus Iohannes Mersshe solempniter exactus non venit set se retraxit in contemptu Regis. Ideo consideratum est quod idem Iohannes Mersshe nichil capiat per breue suum set sit in misericordia. Et predicti Ricardus et Nicolaus eant inde sine die etc.
Text (English translation)London. Richard Edwene and Nicholas Edwene junior was attached to answer John Mersshe on a plea that with force and arms they assaulted John Gateward, servant of the said John Mersshe in London, and beat, wounded and ill-treated him whereby the same John Mersshe lost the service of his aforesaid servant for a long time, and inflicted other enormities on him to the damage of the said John Mersshe of £10, and against the King's peace etc. And whence the same John Mersshe complains through Thomas Pathorne, his attorney, that on Friday 14 June 1381 the aforesaid Richard and Nicholas assaulted, with force and arms, John Gateward, a servant of the said John Mersshe in London, namely in the parish of St. Alban in the ward of Cripplegate, and beat, wounded and ill-treated him, whereby the same John Mersshe lost the service of his aforesaid servant, namely for the two days following the aforesaid Friday, and other enormities etc, to the damage etc and against the peace, whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £10. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid Richard and Nicholas appeared in person, and they request imparlance etc. And afterwards the same Richard and Nicholas came prepared to answer here at the bar thenceforth etc. And the aforesaid John Mersshe, solemnly summoned, did not appear but withdrew himself in contempt of the King. Therefore, it is considered that the aforesaid John Mersshe take nothing by his writ but is in mercy. And the aforesaid Richard and Nicholas may go thenceforth without day etc.
