Text (English translation)Hertfordshire. Robert Bakere of the town of Saint Albans was attached to answer the abbot of Saint Albans on a plea that, with force and arms, he broke the close and houses of the said abbot at the town of Saint Albans, and he threatened to burn down his houses there until the same abbot had made a fine of £20 with the aforesaid Robert for the saving of his aforesaid houses, and took and carried away the same £20, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said abbot and against the King's peace. And whence the same abbot complains through John de Brettone, his attorney, that the aforesaid Robert, on Saturday 15 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close and houses of the said abbot at the town of Saint Albans, and he threatened to burn down his houses there until the same abbot had made a fine of £20 with the aforesaid Robert for the saving of his houses aforesaid, and took and carried away the same £20. And other enormities etc. To the grave damage etc. And against the peace etc. Whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £100. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid Robert appeared in person and says that he is not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and places himself on the country. And the aforesaid abbot likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors here at the octave of Michaelmas 1382. And hereupon John Costantyn and Edward Crane of the county of Derby, Thomas Wyke of Wick of the county of Gloucester and John Prentrys of London, Haberdasher, undertook to produce the aforesaid Robert here at the aforesaid term. At which day the aforesaid abbot came through his aforesaid attorney and appeared against the aforesaid Robert on the aforesaid plea. And he did not come. And he has day here thence by mainprise etc just as appears above. Therefore, the same Robert should be arrested that he might be here in the octave of Hilary 1383 to be heard by the aforesaid jury. And the aforesaid mainpernors should be arrested likewise. Let it be known the aforesaid jury appears in respect to this until the aforesaid term, as manifest in the first roll of the Michaelmas term 1382. Afterwards the process therein was continued between the aforesaid parties by the aforesaid jurors thence between them in respect to this, at this day, namely 30 September 1383, unless William de Skipwythe, one of the justices of the lord King of the common bench, had appeared beforehand at the town of Saint Albans on Thursday 16 July 1383. And presently at this day the aforesaid abbot appeared through his aforesaid attorney. And the aforesaid William, before whom etc, sent here his record in these words: Afterwards, on the day and at the place contained within, before William de Skipworthe, the associate to the William Thirnyng named within, according to the form of the statute etc, the abbot of Saint Albans, named within, appeared through his attorney. And as manifest by jury elsewhere, later it was considered the Robert Bakere named within be arrested for his default. And likewise, the summoned jurors appeared, who, elected, tried and sworn over the premisses contained within, say under their oath that the aforesaid Robert is guilty of the trespass contained within just as the aforesaid abbot complained. And they uphold damages in this matter to £30. Therefore, it is considered that the aforesaid abbot should recover his aforesaid damages from the aforesaid Robert to the £30 assessed. And the aforesaid Robert should be arrested etc.
