Et inde producit sectam etc. Et predicti Egidius Petrus Iohannes Hogge Willelmus et Robertus per Iohannem Seymour attornatum suum venerunt. Et defendunt vim et iniuriam quando etc. Et dicunt quod ipsi in nullo sunt inde culpabiles de transgressione predicta prout idem Iohannes Quenyld superius versus eos queritur. Et de hoc ponent se super patriam. Et predictus Iohannes Quenyld similiter. Ideo preceptum est vicecomiti quod venire faciat hic in octabis Sancte Trinitatis per iusticiarios xii etc per quos etc. Et qui nec etc. Ad recognoscendum etc. Quia tam etc. Ad quem diem venerunt partes etc. Et vicecomes mandat quod breue adeo tarde etc. Ideo sicut prius preceptum est vicecomiti quod venire faciat hic in octabis Sancte Michaelis xii etc. Ad recognoscendum in forma predicta.
Text (English translation)Hertfordshire. Giles Draper of Ware, Peter, vicar of the church of Ware, John Hogge of Wadesmill, William Sandrisst and Robert Toland of Aspenden were attached to answer John Quenyld on a plea that they, together with Thomas Gailler of Westmill, John Pilat of Buntingford, William Broun of Clavering, Bartholomew Skynnere of Buntingford, John Becherel of Langley, John Phippe of Shepenes, John Guidwyne of Chrishall, John Cote of Great Chishill, Thomas Ladde of Great Chishill, Richard Colyn of Great Chishill, Thomas Bereford, labourer, and John Holdere of Great Chishill, with force and arms, burnt the goods and chattels of the said John Quenyld in his houses at Cottered, and also the aforesaid houses, and took and carried away goods and chattels found there to the value of 40m, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said John Quenyld and against the King's peace etc. And whence the same John Quenyld complains in person that the aforesaid Giles, Peter, John Hogge, William and Robert, together with etc, on Saturday 15 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, burnt goods and chattels, namely wheat, barley, beans, peas and oats of the said John Quenyld in his houses at Cottered, and also the aforesaid houses, and they took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely linen and woollen cloth, table cloths, napkins, spoons, gold and silver brooches, bronze and wooden vessels, and other necessaries of the home to the value etc and other enormities etc to the grave damage etc, and against the peace etc. Whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £100. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid Giles, Peter, John Hogge, William and Robert appear through John Seymour, their attorney, and say that they are not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and place themselves on the country. And the aforesaid John Quenyld likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the octave of Trinity 1382. At which day, the parties appear etc. And the sheriff reports that the writ arrived too late etc. Therefore, as previously the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the octave of Michaelmas 1382.
