Text (English translation)Norfolk. Concerning Thomas atte Asshe, bailiff of the bishop of Ely, required to answer and satisfy the King regarding 15l. for the value of the goods and chattels of Roger Hunte, traitor and convict, and regarding 36s. 8d. for the value of the goods and chattels that belonged to Henry Peyrecourt, vicar of the church of Tudenham [Tuddenham, Norf.], outlaw in London at the suit of Roger Rande, clerk. Record that it was ascertained in the roll of particulars of account of John Rede, King's escheator in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, regarding the revenues of the same etc., from 25 October 5 Rich. II [1381] to 12 December 6 Rich. II [1382], that the same escheator did not answer for 15l. for the value of the goods and chattels of Roger Hunte, traitor ‒ who was convicted, before William de Thorpe and his associated justices of the lord King, for the treason which he committed, namely having risen up against his liege on the 4 [14] June 4 Rich. II [1381] ‒ because the aforesaid goods and chattels arrived in the hand of Thomas atte Asshe, bailiff of the bishop of Ely at Mitford [Norf.], just as is contained in a certain inquiry thence held before said escheator etc., regarding which the same Thomas is answerable to the lord King; and nor did the same escheator answer regarding 36s. 8d., for the value of the goods and chattels of Henry Peyrecourt, vicar of the church of Tudenham [Tuddenham, Norf.], outlaw in London at the suit of Roger Rande, clerk, 3 Rich. II [1379‒80] etc., that arrived in the hand of Thomas atte Asshe etc, in the hundred of Mitford, for which he is thence answerable to the lord King [...]. Mention is made of the above in these words: Inquiry held at Bishop's Lynn [now King's Lynn] in the county of Norfolk before John Reed, escheator of the lord King in the same, on 1 June 5 Rich. II [1382], through John Kyrkeman, Nicholas Baron, Adam Palmer, John Noon, Alan Cok, Robert Stannpyn, William Loksmyth, Henry Perisson, Robert Hunt, John Causton, William Film, Peter and John Wallode, jurors, who say under their oath that Roger Hunte, traitor to the lord King and rebel, on the occasion of having risen up against his liege on 14 June 4 Rich. II [1381], convicted before William de Thorpe and his associate justices etc., had diverse goods and chattels to the value of 15l. that arrived in the hand of Thomas atte Asshe, bailiff of the bishop of Ely at Mitford, for which he is thence answerable to the King etc. [...] Given at the day, place and year above. And the tenor of the other follows in these words: Inquiry held at Stokeferye [Stoke Ferry] in the county of Norfolk before John Reed, escheator of the lord King in the county aforesaid, on 20 July 6 Rich. II [1382], through Nicholas Spaldyng, Peter Symund, Richard Birdon, Walter Mannyng, John Freman, Roger Fayrher, John atte Cros, Arnald Perlet, William Wanton, John Herward, John atte Welle, jurors, who say under their oath that Henry Peyrecourt, vicar of the church of Tudenham, outlaw in London in 3 Rich. II [1379‒80] at the suit of Roger Rande, clerk etc., had goods and chattels to the value of 36s. 8d. which arrived in the hand of Thomas atte Hassh etc., for which he thence ought to answer the King etc. [...] Given at the day, place and year above. Thomas atte Asshe was required to be here at the morrow of Michaelmas this term [30 September 1386] to answer and satisfy the King regarding the aforesaid etc. At the aforesaid morrow the aforesaid Thomas came through William de Harleston, his attorney, and he says that he himself ought not answer nor satisfy the King regarding the aforesaid 15l. nor 36s. 8d. for the goods and chattels of the aforesaid Roger Hunte and Henry Peyrecourt etc., nor any part etc. Because, he says, that no goods nor chattels came into the hand of the aforesaid Thomas atte Asshe that belonged to the aforesaid Roger on the aforesaid 14 June 4 Rich. II [1381], nor at any time after, nor goods and nor chattels which belonged to the aforesaid Henry Peyrecourt on the day which he himself was outlawed, nor at any time after etc. [...] He begs the same Thomas be discharged of the aforesaid sum. It is said for the King that diverse goods and chattels which belonged to the aforesaid Roger Hunte on the abovementioned 14 June 4 Rich. II [1381], and belonged to the aforesaid Henry Peyrecourt on the day he was outlawed, came into the hand of the aforsaid Thomas atte Asshe, namely: sheep, oxen, cows, cloth, wool and linen, diverse types of grain, a pot and pan, bed-hangings etc., and other household appurtenances to the value of 15l. and more, at Mitford, and elsewhere in the county of Norfolk, etc. [...] which belonged to the aforesaid Roger Hunte on the abovementioned 14 June 4 Rich. II [1381], and 36s. 8d. for the goods and chattels which belonged to Henry Peyrecourt, for which the same Thomas atte Asshe ought to answer and satisfy the lord King, and a furthermore are answerable to the King regarding 40l. It is asked for the lord King that this be examined by a jury. And the aforesaid Thomas atte Asshe says that which he said before and asks similarly. Therefore let inquiry thence be made, and it ordered that the sheriff of Norfolk come make this at the quindene of Hillary etc. [27 January‒2 February 1388], and the same day is given to the aforesaid Thomas etc.
