Text (English translation)For the burgesses of the town of Beverley The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer, greetings. Though recently, by our special grace, and by means of a fine of 1100m which the burgesses and community of the town of Beverley, consigned to us in the presence of our most beloved uncle John, King of Castile and León, duke of Lancaster, and our other subjects, for diverse treasons, felonies and misprisions made in the county of York, which are to be accepted and terminated, we pardoned the same burgesses and community etc., for all treasons, rebellions, robberies, murders, felonies, extortions, conspiracies, confederacies, champerties, ambidextries, false allegiances, falsities, deceptions, oppressions, forestallings, transgressions, damages and injuries whatsoever made by themselves or perpetrated in any manner at that time past they were indicted, charged or accused, and also outlawries, if such were proclaimed against them on these grounds, and we have granted our firm peace to them, provided however that they stand trial in our court if any wish to plead against them regarding the premisses or any premisses, just as is since contained more fully in our letters patent; later, for 10m which John de Erghom, at that time a burgess of the aforesaid town, paid to us in our chancery hanaper, we pardoned the same John etc. Not wishing that the said John be held to contribute to our fine by means of the burgesses and community of said town, which he had already paid in advance, yet instead we intended and granted that the same John, for the aforesaid 10m paid thus into our hanaper by him, be quit entirely regarding the whole fine aforesaid and that said 10m be deducted from the said fine of 1100m, just as is contained etc., in the letters patent of the same John, and now it might be shown by us, on behalf of the burgesses and community aforesaid, that it is permitted precisely 1090m fine be paid to us on this pretext etc. You, however, understood that said burgesses and community are burdened for 10m over and above the aforesaid sum of 1090m, etc. We command that if you are able to agree the burgesses and community have themselves satisfied us regarding said 1090m, and if, through inspection of the account of our beloved clerk John de Ravenser, keeper of the hanaper of our chancery, you discover our clerk made the same himself regarding the said 10m from the same John de Erghom, on the pretext of our letters aforesaid etc., then you desist the demand that the same burgesses and community pay us 10m over and above said 1090m etc., then the burgesses and community themselves be discharged and quit etc. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 14 June 8 Rich. II [1385].
