Text (English translation)Cambridgeshire. Concerning Hugo la Zouche, knight, and John Brunne, bound to answer and satisfy the King regarding 8l. 3s. 11d. for the value of the goods and chattels that belonged to John Brux, beheaded for treason committed having risen up against his liege. It was ascertained in the roll of account of the escheator, namely in the account of [Ralph] Wykes, King's escheator in the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, regarding the revenues of the same escheator in the counties aforesaid from 12 November 4 Rich. II [1380] until 15 December 5 Rich. II [1381], that the same escheator did not answer regarding the goods and chattels which belonged to John Brux, beheaded at Ramesey [Ramsey, then Hunts. now Cambs.] for the treason that he committed having risen up against his liege on 13 June Rich. II [1381], that are separately appraised at 9l. 10s. 7d., as is contained in a certain inquiry etc., because the goods and chattels aforesaid arrived separately into the hand of Hugo la Zouche, knight, and also Ellen, who was the wife of the same John Brux at Solne [Colne, Cambs.], in the aforesaid county of Huntingdonshire, and John Brunne, namely, in the hand of the said Ellen, goods and chattels to the value of 8l. 3s. 11d., just as is contained in the inquiry aforesaid, and regarding which goods and chattels the same Ellen, Hugo and John ought separately answer the King. Mention of the above was made in these words: Inquiry held before Ralph Wille [Wykes], escheator of the lord King in the county of Cambridgeshire, at Caxton on 20 July 5 Rich. II [1381], by means of the oath of Geoffrey Slache, John atte Brigge, William Pachat, John Trimis, John Samay, John Sembys, Robert Cartere, William Wobbe, John Tredeles, Thomas Smyth, John Ufford and John Capman, who say under their oath that John Brux, who was beheaded at Ramseye for treason, having risen up against his liege on 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381], held, in Caxton [Cambs.], two carucates of land, with pertinences, that is worth 20s. per annum, and no more, which were thus demised at farm, the return from which is assessed at 15s. 8d.; also, they say that he had in the same place: by way of crops, eight acres of land sown with grain, price 40d. per acre; 28 acres of land sown with dredge and oats, price 2s. 8d. per acre; three horses, price 6s. 8d. per head, and two oxen, price 10s. per head; also, one sheep with one hogget [young sheep], price 2s.; six pigs, price 8d. per head; hay, price 10s.; one brass pot, price 18d.; also, three quarters of malt, price 2s. 6d. per quarter; one quarter of flour, price 5s. 4d. [in E368/157 this is a quarter of grain]; one cart load of iron, price 18s. 4d. And, they say, that two of the aforesaid three horses and the said cart are in the hand of Ellen, formerly wife of said John Brux, at Solne in the county of Huntingdonshire, also they say that he had at Caxton, plough timber with two ploughs, price 2s. [in E368/157, the ploughs are worth 2s. 3d. and 2s., so 4s. 3d. in total]; one cart-rail, price 8d., one iron-bound bushel measure, price 8d., which arrived in the hand of Hugo La Zouche, knight, and John Brunne, and for which they are then answerable to the King. The aforesaid Ellen, Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne were required to be here at the morrow of the close of Easter this term [10 April 1385] to separately answer and satisfy the King regarding the 9l. 10s. 6d., aforesaid, for the value of the goods and chattels aforesaid. And at the aforesaid morrow, the aforesaid Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne came through Walter Waltham, their attorney, and the aforesaid Ellen did not come. The aforesaid Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne say for themselves that they themselves ought neither answer nor satisfy the King regarding the aforesaid 8l. 3s. 11d. for the value of the goods and chattels aforesaid, nor any part of it. Because, they state, that none of the goods and chattels aforesaid, nor any part of them, nor any other goods and chattels that belonged to the aforesaid John Brux arrived in the hand of the aforesaid Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne at the abovementioned 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381], nor at any time after, at Caxton in Cambridgeshire, nor elsewhere in the same county etc. And this they put forward etc. It is said for the King that the crops, land, goods and chattels aforesaid, value 8l. 3s. 11d. which belonged to the aforesaid John Brux on the abovementioned 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381] at Caxton, in the said county of Cambridgeshire, and diverse other goods and chattels, which belonged to the aforesaid John on the abovementioned 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381] at Caxton, and elsewhere in Cambridgeshire, to the value of 100l. and more, arrived in the hand of the aforesaid Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne. It is asked for the lord King that this be examined by a jury; the aforesaid Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne say that which they said before, and ask similarly. Therefore, let inquiry be made; and it is ordered that the sheriff of Cambridgeshire undertake this at the quindene of Trinity [12‒18 June 1385] etc., and the same day is given to the aforesaid Hugo la Zouche and John Brunne etc.
