Text (English translation)Hertford. Nicholas atte Forde and John Couherde were attached to answer Agnes Holwell on a plea that they together with Percival Symyon and Johanna his wife and Nicholas the brother of the same Percival, Elias Dokesworth, William Holwell, Michael Blount, Egidius (Guido) Swon, William Dode, John Somery, Richard atte Forde and John Wynard of Bishop's Hatfield with force and arms broke the close of the same Agnes at Bishop's Hatfield and took and carried away her goods and chattels found there worth £40, and other enormities etc. and to the grave damage etc. and against the peace etc. And thus the same Agnes by Nicholas Kyrkeby, her attorney, impleaded that the aforesaid Nicholas atte Forde and John Couherde together etc. on Sunday after Corpus Christ 4 Richard II (16 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords etc., broke the close of the same Agnes at Bishop's Hatfield and took and carried away her goods and chattels found there, namely Wheat, barley, oats beans, peas and wattle, hay, straw, woollen and linen cloths and domestic utensils, worth £40, and other enormities etc. and against the peace etc. whereupon she says that she suffered damage worth £100. And therefore he brings suit etc. And the aforesaid Nicholas atte Forde and John Couherde in their own person come and defend the force and injury etc. And they say that they not guilty of the trespass they are charged with. And they put themselves upon the country. And the aforesaid Agnes does the same ... A day is given for a jury to come before the king's bench in the quindene of Easter ... The same Agnes by her aforesaid attorney appears against the aforesaid Percival and Johanna his wife and Nicholas his brother, Elias, William Holwell, Michael, Egidius, William Dode, John Somery, Richard and John Wynard on the aforesaid plea. And they do not come. [paraphrase:] Elias Dokesworth (12d) and William Holwell (10d) have been distrained. Elias is mainperned by Thomas Joly, Henry Rolf, John Adam and William Post and William is mainperned by Thomas Pope, William May, John Roger and William Henry. They and the others are summoned to come before the king's bench at the above date.
