Text (English translation)Hertfordshire. John Alisaundre of Sawbridgeworth is in mercy for multiple defaults. The same John and Walter Souherde attached to answer the Prior of Saint Edmund's on a plea that with force and arms they broke the houses of the said prior at Sawbridgeworth and burnt charters, writings, court rolls and other muniments of his found there, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said prior, and against the King's peace. And whence the same prior complains through Thomas Ewell, his attorney, that on Friday 14 June 1381 the aforesaid John and Walter, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows broke the houses of the said prior at Sawbridgeworth, and burnt charters, writings, court rolls and also other muniments of his found there, to the damage of the same prior, concerning Sawbridgeworth and touching the right of his church of Saint Edmund's, and other enormities, to the grave damage, and against the peace, whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £40. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid John and Walter appear through Richard Walcham, their attorney, and say that they are not guilty and place themselves on the country. And the aforesaid prior likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the quindene of Hilary 1384. Afterwards this was delayed until the quindene of Easter 1386, and lately at this day the aforesaid parties appeared though their aforesaid attorneys, and the jurors likewise came, who, being elected and sworn to this, say on their oath that the aforesaid John and Walter are not guilty of the aforesaid trespass. Therefore, it is considered that the said prior take nothing by his writ, but is in mercy for his false claim. And the aforesaid John and Walter may go without day.
