Text (English translation)Cambridgeshire. John Wadesmylle attached to answer Thomas Swafham on a plea that he, together with William Kene, John Kene, William Priour junior, Richard Smyth of Thurlow, Thomas Trone, John Howell and John Chacedewe, with force and arms he broke the close and houses of the said Thomas Swafham at Burwell, and took and led away six horses, six bullocks, six cows and a hundred sheep of his found there, price £20, and took and carried away the timber from the aforesaid houses, and also other goods and chattels of his to the value of £20 found in the same, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said Thomas Swafham, and against the King's peace. Whence the same Thomas Swafham, through his attorney Thomas Trigs, complains that on Sunday 16 June 1381 the aforesaid John Wadesmylle, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows broke the close and houses of the said Thomas Swafham at Burwell and took and led away six horses, six bullocks, six cows and a hundred sheep of his found there, price £20, and took and carried away the timber from the aforesaid houses, namely the beams and rafters, as well as goods and chattels of his found there, namely mazer cups, silver spoons, grain, malt, beans and oats, linen and woollen cloth, bronze and brass vessels, and other necessaries of the home to the value of £20, and other enormities, to the grave damage, and against the King's peace, whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £100. And thereof he produces suit. The aforesaid John Wadesmylle appears through Robert Essex, his attorney, and says that he is not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and places himself on the country. And the aforesaid Thomas Swafham likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for three weeks after Easter 1382.
