Text (English translation)Essex. John Webbe of Manningtree, Robert Vyne, William Verye, William Smyth of Manningtree, John Regelage, Robert Lucas, John Neweman, Matthew Ffreman John Wagere, John Ffrend and John Alote junior were attached to respond to Thomas Hardyng, together with John Dawe of Manningtree, Richard atte Grove, John Cole, Thomas Saungylle, John Leche, John Waggere, Geoffrey Cristien, Reginald Clerk, William Wethir, Walter Hulman, Roger atte Berne of Ramsey, William Oras, John Ffreysel, Thomas atte Stone, Walter Bole, Roger Herde, John atte Hache, Philip Coyllour, Thomas Chaunterell and John Bacoun of Ramsey on a plea that with force and arms they broke closes and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Manningtree and Mistley and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £40 and other enormities etc. to the grave damage etc. And against the peace etc. And therefore the same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney Edmund Heryng impleaded that the said John Webbe, Robert Vyne, William Smyth of Manningtree, William Verye, John Rigelage, Robert Lucas, John Neweman and Matthew [Freman; missing], John Waggere, John Ffrend and John Alote junior, together with John Dawe, Richard, John, Thomas, John, Geoffrey, Reginald, William, Walter, Roger, William, John, Thomas, Walter, Roger, John, Philip, Thomas and John Bacoun on Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (17 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords, clubs and axes broke closes and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Manningtree and Mistley and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely woollen and linen cloth, pieces of silver plate and silver spoons, broches and rings of gold and silver, a maple-wood bowl with a silver rim, a brazen vessel, timber and lead worth £40. And they committed other enormities to the grave damage of the said Thomas Hardyng and against the king's peace. Whereof he (says) that he suffers damage. And the damage he has is worth 100 mark and therefore he brings this suit etc. And the said John Webbe, Robert Vyne, William Verye, William Smyth, John Regelage, Robert Lucas, John Neweman, Matthew Freman, John Waggere, John Frend and John Alote junior by their attorney come and defend the force and injury whenever etc. And they say that they are not guilty. And they put themselves upon the country. And the said Thomas Hardyng does the same. Therefore, a jury should come before the King's Bench in the quindene of Michaelmas wherever etc. ... Also, a day is given to the parties etc. And the same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney appears against John Dawe of Manningtree, Richard atte Grove, John Cole, Thomas Saungylle, John Leche, Geoffrey Cristien, Reginald Clerk, William Wethir, Walter Hulman, Roger atte Berne of Ramsey, William Oras, John Ffreysel, Thomas atte Stone, Walter Bole, Roger Herde, John atte Hache, Philip Coyllour, Thomas Chaunterell and John Bacoun of Ramsey on the aforesaid plea . And theuy do not come. And as before the sheriff is ordered to arrest them . And the sheriff now returns that they cannot be found nor to they have anything by which (they can be distrained). And as elsewhere the sheriff is ordered to arrest them etc. ... And to have their bodies before the King's Bench on the day of Michaelmas in three weeks wheresoevder etc. And later, namely on 11th day of July in the same term [1382] the aforesaid John Dawe appears before the King's Bench and gives himself up. And upon this John Webbe of Manningtree, John Aubre, John Duk and John Donyng undertake to have his body before the King's Bench at the aforesaid term etc.
