Text (English translation)Essex. Jacob Cranesen of Dedham was attached to answer Thomas Hardyng in a plea that with force and arms he, together with William Ffygenot, John Roger, Thomas Roger, junior, Roger Gladewyne, John Crab of Mistley, Nicholas Ffrere, Henry Clopton, William Cruet, John Wryghte of Bromley, William Gardyner, Robert Mayheu, John Smyth of Harwich, John Gardyner and Thomas Broun de Wix broke the close and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Manningtree and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £40 and other enormities etc. to the grave damage etc. and against the peace etc. And therefore the same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney Edmund Heryng impleaded that the said Jacob Craneson on Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (17 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords, clubs and axes etc., together with etc. broke the close and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Manningtree and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely woollen and linen cloth, bronze and copper vessels, lead, a maple-wood bowl, pieces of silver plate and silver spoons, rings and broches of gold worth £40. And they committed other enormities to the grave damage of the said Thomas Hardyng and against the king's peace. Wherof he (says) that he suffers damage. And the damage he has is worth 100 mark and therefore he brings this suit etc. And the aforesaid Jacob by his attorney came and defended the force and injury whenever etc. And he says that he is not guilty. And he put himself upon the country. And the said Thomas Hardyng does the same. Therefore, a jury should come before the King's Bench in the week of Michaelmas wherever etc. Twenty four both knights and other free and law-worthy men of the view ... Also, a day is given to the parties etc. The same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney appears against William Ffygenot, John Roger, Thomas Roger, junior, Roger Gladewyne, John Crab of Mistley, Nicholas Ffrere, Henry Clopton, William Cruet, John Wryghte of Bromley, William Gardyner, Robert Mayheu, John Smyth of Harwich, John Gardyner and Thomas Broun on the aforesaid plea. And they do not come. The sheriff was ordered to attach them. And the sheriff now returns that they cannot be found etc. and they don't have anything by which [they can be distrained]. Sheriff is ordered to have their bodies before the King's Bench at the aforesaid term etc. In default whereof the week of St John the Baptist. Essex. The same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney appears against John Ffylugaunt, Nicholas Saundresson, John Algood junior, Walter Dawe, Roger Gestwych, Thomas Groos, John Webbe of Ramsey, John Boyton, Robert Dawe, Richard Ffrend, John Aynot junior, Thomas Tayllour of Ramsey, William Colyn, Robert atte Wode, John Groos senior, John Groos junior, Robert Ffelyere, John Malyn, Robert Rolf, John Broun, Richard Beneyt and John Hereward on a plea of tresspass. And they do not come. The sheriff was ordered to attach them. And the sheriff now returns that they cannot be found etc. and they don't have anything by which [they can be distrained]. Sheriff is ordered to have their bodies before the king in the week of Michaelmas term wherever etc. In default whereof the week of St John the Baptist.
