Text (English translation)Essex. John Somenour of Manningtree, Richard atte Grove, John Kervylle, chaplain, William Verye, John Neweman, John Dawe and Geoffrey Verye were attached to answer Thomas Hardyng in a plea that with force and arms they together with Johanna wife of John Somenour and Agnes daughter of the same John, Robert Piers, John Gernoun of Manningtree, William Chaumberleyn, William Gundeveyn, Richard Bene, John Gayton, Robert Waleys, Thomas Bakere, John Horpol, John Bollard of Harwich, Thomas Boyton and Stephen Tayllour of Manningtree broke the closes and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Manningtree and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £40 and other enormities etc. to the grave damage etc. And against the peace etc. And therefore the same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney impleaded that the said John Somenour, Richard atte Grove, John Kervylle, chaplain, William Verye, John Neweman John Dawe, Geoffrey Verye on Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (17 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords, clubs and axes together with etc. broke closes and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Manningtree and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely woollen and linen cloth, wool-fells, fleeces, brazen vessels, silver girdles, timber worth £40. And they committed other enormities to the grave damage of the said Thomas Hardyng. And against the peace. Whereof he says that he suffers damage. And the damage he has is worth 100 mark and therefore he brings this suit. And the aforesaid John Somenour of Manningtree, Richard atte Grove, John Kervyll, chaplain, William Verye, John Neweman, John Dawe and Geoffrey Verye come and defend the force and injury whenever etc. And they say that they are not guilty. And they put themselves upon the country. And the said Thomas Hardyng does the same. Therefore, a jury should come before the King's Bench in the week of Michaelmas wherever etc. of the aforesaid view ... Also, a day is given to the parties etc. The same Thomas Hardyng by his attorney appears against Johanna, wife of John Somenour, and Agnes, daughter of the same John, Robert Piers, John Gernoun of Manningtree, William Chaumberleyn, William Gundeveyn, Richard Bene, John Gayton, Robert Waleys, Thomas Bakere, John Horpol, John Bollard of Harwich, Thomas Boyton and Stephen Tayllour of Manningtree on the aforesaid plea. And they do not come. The sheriff was ordered to attach them. And the sheriff now returns that they cannot be found etc. and they don't have anything by which [they can be distrained]. Sheriff is ordered to have their bodies before the King's Bench at the aforesaid term etc. In default whereof the week of St John the Baptist. Essex. William Chestayne, John Burgh, John Payn of Mistley, John Ketel, Robert Hilp, Geoffrey Panyman were attached to answer Thomas Hardyng in a plea that with force and arms they, together with William Coupere, John Coupere, John Leche, Richard Moys, William Braunford, Richard Whytyng, John Cook of Bentley, Thomas Wollemare, John Gilmyn, William Gosfeld, Thomas Blaunche, William, son of William Munt, William Burstall of Ardleigh, Alexander Vyns and William atte Walle broke the close and houses of Thomas Hardyng at Mistley and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there worth £40, and they burnt charters and deeds and other muniments found there. And other enormities etc. to the grave damage of the same Thomas Hardyng and against the king's peace etc. And therefore the same Thomas Hardyng by Edmund Heryng attorney impleaded that the said William Chestayne, John Burgh, John Payn of Mistley, John Ketel, Robert Hilp, Geoffrey Panyman on Sunday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (16 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords, clubs and axes together with etc. broke closes and houses of the same Thomas Hardyng at Mistley and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there worth £40, namely woollen and linen cloth, malt, wheat, barley, peas, threshed oats, and timber, wool and wool-fells, and they burnt charters and deeds concerning divers of his tenants of his manor of Newhall at Mistley and other muniments. And other enormities etc. to the grave damage of the same Thomas Hardyng and against the peace etc. Whereof he says that he suffers damage. And the damage he has is worth £100 and therefore he brings this suit. And the said William Chestayne, John Burgh, John Payn of Mistley, John Ketel, Robert Hilp, Geoffrey Panyman by their attorney come and defend the force and injury whenever etc. And they say that they are not guilty. And they put themselves upon the country. And the said Thomas Hardyng does the same. Therefore, a jury should come before the King' Bench in the week of Michaelmas wherever etc. ...
