Text (English translation)Essex. Concerning John Sewall, to be discharged regarding 26s. 8d. for the price of one horse with saddle and bridle from the goods and chattels of John de Preston, traitor, having risen up against his liege; and John Bray, squire of the county of Essex, is to be answerable. Record that it was discovered in the roll of particulars of account of Robert de Goldyngton, King's escheator in the county of Essex, regarding the revenues of the same escheator in the county aforesaid from 10 June 4 Rich. II [1381] to 11 November next [1381], that the escheator did not answer regarding one horse with a saddle and bridle, price 26s. 8d., from the goods and chattels of John Preston of St. Osyth [Essex], traitor to the king, beheaded, thus appraised through the inquiry held before the said escheator etc., therefore the aforesaid horse, saddle and bridle arrived in the hand of John Sewall of Coggeshale [Coggeshall, Essex], sheriff of Essex, who was thereafter answerable to the King. The inquiry made mention of the above etc., in these words: Inquiry held at St. Osyth before Robert de Goldyngton, escheator of the lord King in the county of Essex, in the presence of William Berlaund, knight, controller of the lord King in the county, this moment of rumour, Tuesday after the octave of Michaelmas 5 Rich. II [8 October 1381], through the oath of Robert Talbot, Thomas Fullere, Thomas Cokebelle, Robert Austy, William Jaket, John Martyn, William Clerk, John Kent, John Phippe, John Rys, Roger Dyere and Thomas Lawe say that John Preston of St. Osyth, who was accused and convicted of diverse felonies and seditions and was beheaded for this reason at Chelmesford [Chelmsford, Essex] on Wednesday after the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist 5 Rich. II [26 June 1381], had, on the day that the aforesaid felonies and seditions were perpetrated, one horse with a saddle and bridle, price 26s. 8d., which came into the hand of John Sewall etc. John Sewall was required to be here on the morrow of Michaelmas, this term [30 September 1386], to answer and satisfy the King regarding 26s. 8d. for the aforesaid horse, saddle and bridle. At the aforesaid morrow, the aforesaid John did not come, but afterwards, namely after default, the aforesaid came in person and says that he ought not answer or satisfy the King etc., because, he says the neither the horse, saddle nor bridle aforesaid, nor any saddle, nor any other goods which belonged to the aforesaid John Preston on the day of the felonies and treasons were made, nor at any time afterwards, came into the hand of the aforesaid John Sewall. And this he puts forward to prove in whatever court etc. But, he says, that the aforesaid horse with saddle and bridle arrived in the hand of John Bray, squire of the county of Essex, and he begs that the aforesaid John be examined etc. Regarding which, the aforesaid John, in court in person on 13 October this term [1386], acknowledged that the said horse with saddle and bridle arrived in his hand, and he is answerable to the lord King regarding the 26s. 8d. for the aforesaid; the aforesaid John Sewall is to be discharged on the strength of this.
