Text (English translation)Cambridgeshire. Concerning John Brunne, to be made answerable for 6l. 17s. 2d. for the price of the goods and chattels which belonged to John Deye of Wylyngham [Willingham, Cambs.], traitor to the lord King, having risen up against his liege on 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381]. It has been ascertained in the rolls of the particulars of the account of Ralph Wykes, escheator in the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, concerning the revenues of the same escheator in the aforesaid counties from 12 November 4 Rich. II [1380] until 15 December 5 Rich. II [1381], that the same escheator had not answered regarding 6l. 17s. 2d. for the value of the goods and chattels listed below which belonged to John Deye of Wyllyngham [Willingham, Cambs.], traitor to the lord King having risen up against his liege on 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381], namely for the price of: one grey-coloured horse with saddle and bridle, price 20s.; one scot bay, price 3s.; 500 sods of turf, price 2s. 1d.; one stack of faggots, price 2s.; one basin, price 8d.; three stacks of fodder, price 13s. 4d.; one broken-down cart, price 6d.; timber, price 11d.; seven ducks, price 1d. per head; two ladders with all the useful steps between the poles, price 6d.; one tub, price 4d.; one wood cutting, price 2d.; a crop of three roods of land sown with vetch, price 18d.; one saddle pack [saddlebag], price 12d.; one sword with a shield, price 12d.; one chair, price 8d.; one bed, price 2s.; two chests, price 6d.; three colts, price 10s.; one cutting of twigs, price 6d.; 16 reed faggots and one barrow, price 6d.; one quarter of malt, price 2s. 6d.; ten bullocks, price 5m, which arrived in the hand of John Broune, and thence he is answerable to the lord King. The goods and chattels were valued in a certain inquiry held before the aforesaid escheator, on the strength of his office. Said inquiry made mention of the above in these words: Inquiry held before Ralph Wykes, escheator of the lord King in the county of Cambridgeshire, at Wyllyngham on 1 August 5 Rich. II [1381], through the oath of John Lolleworth, John Andrew, Thomas Tredegold, William Smyth, William Rithso, Walter Freman, Robert Bocher, Richard Torrell, Thomas Malkhous, John Howdon, John Sanndreson, and John Bolle, who say on their oath that John Deye of Willyngham, traitor to the lord King having risen up against his liege on 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381], held one messuage, recently seized, and one rood of land worth 3d. per annum, and had goods and chattels [as above, but adding 1 piglet, price 6d., and 1 calf, price 6d., bullocks are now oxen]...which arrived in the hand of John Broune. Regarding which the aforesaid John Broune was required to be here in the octave of Michaelmas [6‒12 October], this term, to answer and satisfy the King regarding 6l. 17s. 2d. for the price of the aforesaid goods and chattels. And on the aforesaid octave of Michaelmas the aforesaid John Broune did not come, but after, namely after default, the aforesaid came in person and recognises that the goods and chattels which belonged to John Deye of Willyngham, traitor etc., came into the hand of the same; and he says he himself is answerable to the King for the 6l. 17s. 2d. etc.
