Text (English translation)Essex. The same dean and chapter of the church of St Paul's in London [John de Appleby] by their aforesaid attorney [name of attorney above missing], plaintiff, appear against Thomas Ryvell of Kirby-le-Soken, Richard atte Welle of Thorpe-le-Soken, Robert Salove of Thorpe-le-Soken, Robert Page of Thorpe-le-Soken, John Lorkyn of Thorpe-le-Soken, John Tannere of Thorpe-le-Soken, Andrew Bernerene and John Brounyng, defendants, on a plea that with force and arms they broke the close and houses the said dean and chapter at Thorp-le-Soken and burnt their books, [court] rolls and other muniments worth £40 found there and inflicted other enormities on them to the grave injury of the dean and the chapter and against the king's peace etc. And they [the defendants] do not come. And the said Thomas Ryvell is attached by Henry John and Robert Cobbe. Therefore they are in mercy. The sheriff is ordered to distrain him by all his land etc. ... And that he has his body here in front of the court in the quindene of Hilary. And of the said Richard atte Welle and all the others he reports that they have nothing [by which they can be distrained] etc. The sheriff is ordered to arrest them to have their bodies in front of the court in the aforesaid term ...
