Text (English translation)For the burgesses of the town of Huntyngdon [Huntingdon, Hunts.] The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer greetings. Though, among certain franchises and immunities for our beloved burgesses of Huntyngdon [Huntingdon, Hunts.], it was granted to the same by a charter of our ancestors, formerly kings of England, that they might have every sort of chattel of felons and fugitives, and also of outlaws, of all tenants and residents within the town and liberty aforesaid as well as from strangers and others whosoever discovered within the aforesaid town and liberty, and they might be able to retain them for the use of the same burgesses, in support of their faithful town aforesaid, without impediment etc, and yet 6 September, 5 Rich. II [1381], it was learned that Ralph Wykes, then our escheator in the county of Huntingdonshire, retained the chattels of diverse felons during the recent disturbance in our kingdom, having discovered rebellion in the aforesaid town. Our beloved servant William Wyghtman stood surety, responsible to us at our then parliament next, for the aforesaid chattels or for their value etc. We command the same escheator that he permit the burgesses themselves to place in their possession all the chattels of the felons in the recent rebellion found in the aforesaid town, etc. You we command that the demand the same burgesses or escheator pay the same to us, through a summons of the exchequer aforesaid, be desisted [supersederi] until our next parliament, in which we wish discussion of this matter be made. Witnessed by myself at Westminster 28 November, 6 Rich. II [1382].
