Text (English translation)For William Bokenham The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer greetings. Wishing for certain reasons to be informed about the tenor of certain inquiry by Ralph Wyke, lately our escheator in the county of Cambridgeshire, regarding certain lands and tenements that belonged to William Bokenham, held in the aforesaid county and returned to before yourselves in the aforesaid exchequer in order that it be declared formally, to you we command that, concerning the tenor of the aforesaid inquiry, you return this our writ to our chancery under the seal of the same exchequer, separately and openly, without delay. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 7 May, 6 Rich. II [1383]. This writ is sent back to chancery together with a certificate about the premises - containing these words: The tenor of the inquiry etc. The inquiry was held in the presence of Ralph Wyke, escheator of the lord king in the country of Cambridgeshire, at Lynton on Monday before the feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross, 5 Rich. II [9 September 1381] under the oaths of Henry Martyn, John Clopton, Henry Smyth, John Cate, Thomas Bodeneys, John Daye, John Longhikkesson, Walter Courthose, Hugo Baker, John Smyth of Bartlow [Cambs.], John Cok and John Taillor of Bartlow. They state that John Songere of Hynxton [Hinxton, Cambs.], traitor to the lord king, having risen up against his liege on 13 June, 4 Rich. II [1381], had goods and chattels, namely a crop of two acres of land sown with dredge [mixed barley and oats], price 3s. per acre, and a crop of one acre of land sown with peas, price 2s. Also, they state that William de Bokenham, traitor to the lord king etc., had lands and tenements in Hynxton [Hinxton, Cambs.], namely one messuage with a certain building that is worth 6d. per annum after deductions, 61 acres of arable land, which is worth 15s. per annum, and two acres of meadow which is worth 3s. per annum. In which matter etc. And let it be recorded that the same inquiry remains in a certain bag of particulars of account of the aforesaid Ralph Wykes, king's escheator in the county of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, concerning the revenues of the same escheator from 12 November 4 Rich. II [1380] until 15 December 5 Rich. II [1381], that is in the custody of the king's remembrancer.
