Text (English translation)m. 11d Pleas held on Friday 19th July 1381. Another inquisition held by oath of Richard de Quere, John de Erheth, William de Craunfeld, John Dene, Richard Waltessheff, John Fytheler, John Lanxhill, Richard Rougham, William Roxham, Simon in the Lane, William de Stanton and Nicholas Fairman, who say upon their oath that Thomas Barr of Sutton on Sunday 16th June 1381 arose with a great force at Sutton and went to the house of Richard Waltesheff, constable of the town of Sutton, and ordered him to rise with him or he would burn his house, and then the same Thomas proceeded feloniously to Mepal to the house of John Fedeler, seeking to take and kill John Whyte of Ely and Thomas Somenour, and he seized and took away a certain horse belonging to Thomas. Also they say that on Tuesday 18th June 1381 John Lollewurth went to Ramsey as an insurgent against the peace, not coerced, but of his own free will, and feloniously despoiled [the people]. Also they say that Elias Glovere, John Somersham, John Beeff and John Shether dwelling on Steeple Gate in Ely came to Coveney against the peace at the time of the insurrection, namely on Saturday 15th June 1381, to search for Roger Harlaston feloniously and to do other evil deeds. Also they say that John Michel, chaplain, went out of the Isle of Ely into the company of John Wraw, chaplain and ringleader of the rebels, and became one of his deputies, and returned to the aforesaid Isle of Ely, and was there for three days at the time of the disturbance and rumour, whilst many felonies and evil deeds were perpetrated there and at Witcham and at Wentworth by himself and unknown others, to the prejudice of the Crown, and he made proclamations. And those indicated aforesaid did not appear. Therefore the sheriff was ordered to arrest the aforesaid Thomas Barre and all others indicted above, and that they should appear before the justices on Saturday 20th July 1381. On which Saturday at Ely the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Thomas Barre and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction. Therefore the sheriff was ordered as before to arrest them, and that they should appear before the justices at Haddenham on Monday 9th September 1381 to answer to the king. And that in the meantime the sheriff should inquire diligently into the goods, chattels, lands and tenements that they hold jointly or severally and seize them, and this to be plainly certified at the aforesaid term. On which Monday the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Thomas Barre and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction etc. outside the liberty of the Bishop of Ely. He made the return of this order to Simon de Wyghton, bailiff of the aforesaid liberty to make execution and Simon had not responded to him. Therefore as before the sheriff was ordered not to omit the liberty of Bishop of Ely nor any other liberty they might enter, and to arrest the aforesaid Thomas Barre and all others named above, and that they should appear before the justices at Ely on Monday 7th October 1381 to answer to the king. On which Monday the justices did not appear.
