Text (English translation)m. 11 Isle of Ely. Pleas held before lord Hugh la Zouche and his fellow justices on Thursday 18th July 1381. An inquisition taken at Ely on the aforesaid Thursday by oath of William Craunfeld, Thomas Pilryn, John Dene, John Fytheler, John Andreu, Henry Helgeye, Richard de Quere, John Aldesheth, John Erheth, John Feror, Benedict Rysell and John Wetyng, who say upon their oath that on Monday 17th June 1381, Thomas Lyncoln of Littleport, Thomas Ixnyng, John atte Style, Thomas Crede, William Dancastre, John Webester of Littleport and William Cartere of the same, with many others whose names are unknown, rose up against the king's peace, and feloniously took and burnt various court rolls and other documents belonging to Thomas Bishop of Ely at Ely. Also they say that Robert Plomer of Ely, John son of Nicholas Gunneld and Thomas son of John Graunt of Ely feloniously rose up against the peace and went out of the lordship of Ely to Ramsey, with Robert Tavell, instigator and leader of the insurgents and wrongdoers, on Tuesday 18th June 1381. Also they say that John Ferier of Sutton, Humphrey Feldyng, Richard Bythewal, Richard Palfreyman, John Fysshe, tailor and John Wynde of Sutton, with many others whose names are unknown at present, on the aforesaid Tuesday came from Sutton to Witcham in order to rise up, and feloniously threatened William Craunfeld with beheading in order to obtain a fine from him when no trespass was committed. And that the same John Ferier, Humphrey, Richard, Richard, John and John on the same day came to Wentworth and rose up against the peace, and by force and arms feloniously entered the manor of the Sacristan of Ely, maliciously seeking the said Sacristan, against the peace. And that the aforesaid John Ferier and Humphrey Feldyng were the first to rise up and gather wrongdoers to them, namely, the aforesaid Richard Bythewal, Richard Palfreyman, John Fysshe, John Wynde, Robert Wynde, Richard Smyth of Sutton and Geoffrey Waleys and many others unknown, and they carried out the said felonies with force and arms on the said Tuesday. And John Fysshe, tailor and John Wynde have given themselves up freely and remain in the Bishop of Ely's prison at Ely, because for certain reasons the justice is unwilling to come to a decision. And that the aforesaid Humphrey Feldyng on Monday 17th June 1381 with others unknown feloniously broke into the Bishop of Ely's prison at Ely and set the prisoners free. And that the said John Ferier, John Waltessheff senior, John Waltessheff junior, William Hamerton and Richard Bythewal feloniously rose up against the peace with other wrongdoers on Tuesday 18th June 1381 and proceeded into Huntingdonshire, and committed various felonies there. And that William son of Simon atte Townesend on Monday 17th June 1381 with other wrongdoers whose names are unknown feloniously broke open the Bishop of Ely's prison at Ely and let the prisoners go free. And all those indicted above do not appear, except John Fysshe and John Wynde who have given themselves up. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to arrest them, and that they should appear before the sheriff on Saturday 20th July 1381. On which Saturday the sheriff returned that the aforesaid Thomas Lyncoln and all those indicted above, with the exception of those who gave themselves up, were not found in his jurisdiction. Therefore the sheriff was ordered as before to arrest them, and that they should appear before the justices at Haddenham below the Isle of Ely on Monday 9th September 1381 to respond separately to the king. And that in the meantime the sheriff should inquire diligently into the goods and chattels that those indicted aforesaid hold jointly or severally and seize them into the king's hand, and this to be plainly certified according at the aforesaid term. On which Monday the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Thomas Lyncoln and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction etc. outside the liberty of the Bishop of Ely. He made the return of this order to Simon de Wyghton, bailiff of the aforesaid liberty to make execution and Simon had not responded to him. Therefore as before the sheriff was ordered not to omit the liberty of Bishop of Ely nor any other liberty they might enter, and to arrest the aforesaid Thomas Lyncoln of Littleport, Thomas Ixnyng, John atte Stoke and all others named above, except those who have given themselves up, and that they should appear before the justices at Ely on Monday 7th October 1381 to answer to the king. On which Monday the justices did not appear.
