Text (English translation)m. 10d Continued: Also John Bakere and his associates say that John Shether, Elias Glovere, John Dashe, skinner, John Tylneye, wright, John Redor, Thomas Litster, Richard Swan and John Milner above named, were principal insurgents with Richard Leycester and John Buk who first rose up and with other felons feloniously broke open the prison of lord Thomas Bishop of Ely and led out the king's prisoners therein, burnt the Bishop's books and likewise were accomplices in the killing of Edmund de Walsingham, justice of the peace, and feloniously killed him. They also say that George atte Grove, John Bole, John Cheveyn senior, John Cheveyn junior, Richard Goolde, Thomas Bokenham, Walter Wryht, Richard Prentiz, John Dykeman, Richard Chapman, Richard servant of Elias Glover, John Payn, wright, John Clymme, Henry Cook, Thomas Tydy, John Somersham, Robert de Lynne, shearman, John Russh, Robert servant of Richard Leycester, John Taillor ate Stepel, John Everesholt, Robert Plomer, and John his servant, Roger Soutere of Ely, and William Swon were common rebels against the peace at the instigation and command of the aforesaid John Shether and his companions, their leaders. And the aforesaid John Cheveyn senior, John Clymme and Thomas Tydy have been arrested and brought before the justices, and asked how they wished to plead, and they said they were not guilty of the charges, and placed themselves on their country for good or ill. And on this matter by various jurors in a legitimate manner they were acquitted, and pledges came for their good behaviour to the king and people: John Whyte, John Andreu', John Barr', Richard de Quer'. And they were sworn to the peace. And the aforesaid John Russh, John Taillor atte Stepel, Robert de Lynn, shearman, Simon Teye and Henry Cook have been arrested and remain in the prison of the Bishop of Ely at Ely, because the justices have not been advised by a writ of certiorari with which to come to a decision. And all others indicated above do not appear. Therefore the sheriff was ordered to arrest the aforesaid John Shether, Elias Glovere, John Dassh, skinner, John Tylneye, wright, John Reder, Thomas Litster, Richard Swoon, John Milner, George atte Grove, John Bole, John Cheveyn junior, Richard Goolde, Thomas Bokenham, Walter Wryghte, Richard Prentys, John Dykeman, Richard Chapman, Richard servant of Elias Glovere, John Payn, wright, John Somersham, Robert servant of Richard de Leycestre, John Eversholt, Robert Plomer, John his servant, Roger Soutere of Ely and William Swon, and that they should appear before the justices on Saturday 20th July 1381, wherever they may be in the county of Cambridgeshire after this Thursday. On which Saturday the sheriff returns that the aforesaid John Shether and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction. Therefore the sheriff was ordered as before to arrest them, and that they should appear before the justices at Haddenham below the Isle of Ely on Monday 9th September 1381 to answer to the king. And in the meantime the sheriff should diligently inquire into the goods and chattels those indicated aforesaid hold jointly or severally, and seize them etc., and this to be plainly certified at the aforesaid term. On which Monday the sheriff returned that the aforesaid John Shether and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction etc. outside the liberty of the Bishop of Ely. He made the return of this order to Simon de Wyghton, bailiff of the aforesaid liberty to make execution, but Simon had not responded to him. Therefore as before the sheriff was ordered not to omit the liberty of Bishop of Ely nor any other liberty they might enter, and to arrest the aforesaid John Shether and all others named above, and that they should appear before the justices at Ely on Monday 7th October 1381 to answer to the king. On which Monday nothing further was done. Ely. Adam Clymme was taken as an insurgent traitorously against his allegiance, and because on Saturday 15th June 1381 he traitorously with others made insurrection at Ely, feloniously broke and entered the close of Thomas Somenour and there took and carried away divers rolls, estreats of the green wax of the lord the King and the Bishop of Ely, and other muniments touching the Court of the lord the King, and forthwith caused them to be burned there to the prejudice of the crown of the lord the King. Further that the same Adam on Sunday and Monday next following caused to be proclaimed there that no man of law or other officer in the execution of duty should escape without beheading. Further that the same Adam the day and year aforesaid at the time of the insurrection was always wandering armed with arms displayed, bearing a standard, to assemble insurgents, commanding that no man of whatsoever condition he were, free or bond, should obey his lord to do any services or customs, under pain of beheading, otherwise than he should declare to them on behalf of the Great Fellowship. And so he traitorously took upon him royal power. And he came, brought by the sheriff, and was charged before the aforesaid justices touching the premises, in what manner he would acquit himself thereof. And he says that he is not guilty of the premises imputed to him or of any of the premises, and hereof puts himself on the country, etc. And forthwith a jury is made thereon for the lord the King by twelve [good and lawful men] etc., who being chosen hereto, tried and sworn, say on their oath that the aforesaid Adam is guilty of all the articles. By the discretion of the justices the same Adam is drawn and hanged, etc. And it was found there that the same Adam has in the town aforesaid chattels to the value of 32s., which Ralph atte Wyk, escheator of the lord the King, seized forthwith and made further execution for the lord the King, etc. William Combere, by the decision of the justices, was hanged, because it was ascertained that he was an aider, abettor and supporter of all treasons, felonies and other wrongdoings committed at the time of the insurrection by the aforesaid Adam [Clymme], Richard Leycestre and John Buk, otherwise committed or perpetrated, from whence he himself was convicted. And throughout the time of the insurrection with other strangers [...] and out of malice he held the causeway and bridge of Stuntney lest any of the King's or Bishop's ministers should pass that way. His chattels were worth 16s. 7d.
