The abbot of Westminster by Henry Oundell his attorney, plaintiff, appears against William Rook of Aldenham, John atte Hell, smith, William Vayle, John Godegrom, John Colyere of Elsetree, John Smyth, Nicholas atte Stone, John Bacon, Richard Chapman of Aldenham, Simon Hamond and Roger atte Grene, defendants, on a plea that they broke with force and arms an embankment of the said abbot at Aldenham and they uprooted trees and underwood recently grown there and burnt his [the abbot's] charters, deeds, court rolls, rentals and other muniments found there and they inflicted other enormities upon him to the grave damage to the abbot himself and against the king's peace. And they do not come. And the sheriff had been ordered to attach them. And the sheriff now reports that he cannot bring them before the court. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to arrest them ... And to have their bodies here before the court in the quindene of Michaelmas ... Hertfordshire. Roger Turnour of St Albans, Philip Carpenter, Richard Hunte carpenter, John Longe carpenter, John Hardy, John Baynhale, John Marford, Johanna that was Annota's servant Pursere, John Barbour of St Albans, John Champion, John Parkere dyer, Gilbert Toby, William Astrell of Hemel Hampstead, John Pays, John Darnewel, Henry Toweton, William Haddele, Robert Marchal of Barnet, John Milward of Barnet, Geoffrey Rook and Thomas that was Ionysservant atte Ree were attached to respond Richard Scryveyne of St Albans in his plea that he together with John Britiere, John Wymond, John Rede of East Reed, John Mason hostiler, Stephen Sawyere, William Fraunceys, John Forthe, Henry Parchymener of Berkhamsted, Robert Holm, Edmund Cook of Berkhamsted, Henry Cook of Berkhamsted, John Aston, Ralph Bungeton, Hugo Fullere of Watford, Robert Scraulee, Robert Ivere of Berkhamsted, John Park of Berkhamsted, John de Bury of Berkhamsted, William atte Hull of Berkhamsted, Robert Chaloner of Berkhamsted, Henry Aston and William Aston with force and arms broke the close and the houses of the same Richard Scryveyn at the town of St Albans and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £40 and they inflicted other enormities upon him to the grave damage to Richard Scryveyn himself and against the king's peace. And therefore the same Richard Scryveyn by John More, his attorney, impleaded that the said Roger Turnour, Philip, Richard Hunte, John Longe, John Hardy, John Baynhale, John Marford, Johanna, John Barbour, John Champion, John Parkere, Gilbert, William Astrell, John Pays, John Darnewell, Henry Toweton, William Haddele, Robert Marchal, John Milward, Geoffrey and Thomas together etc. on Saturday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (15 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close of the said Richard Scryveyne at the town of St Albans and took and carried away his goods and chattels, namely wheat, malt, barley, beans, peas and oats, linen and woollen cloths, brass and wooden vessels and other domestic utensils found there worth etc. and other enormities etc. to the great damage etc. And against the king's peace etc. Therefore he said he suffered loss and had damage worth £60. And therefore he brings this suit etc. And the said Robert Turnour and all the others by Richard de Carlton, their attorney, came. And they defend the force and injury whenever (it behoves them) etc. And they say that they are not guilty of the aforesaid trespasses of which the said Richard Scryveyn has accused them. And they place themselves upon the country. And the aforesaid Richard Scryveyn similarly. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make them appear at Easter in quindene... and xii (jurors) etc. ... The same Richard Scryveyn by his aforesaid attorney appears against John Britiere, John Wymond, John Rede, John Mason hostiler, Stephen, William Fraunceys, John Forthe, Henry Parchymener, Robert Holm, Edmund Cook, Henry Cook, John Aston, Ralph Bungeton, Hugo Fullere, Robert Scraulee, Robert Ivere, John Park, John de Bury, William atte Hull, Robert Chaloner, Henry Aston and William Aston on the aforesaid [plea] etc. And they do not come. And the sheriff had been ordered to attach them etc. And the sheriff now reports that both of the aforesaid, Edmund and Henry Cook are attached by John Fage and John Larke. Therefore they are in mercy. And the sheriff is ordered to distrain them by all their land etc. ... And that he has their bodies here in the quindene of Michaelmas ...
