Et unde idem Henricus per Iohannem Corbrigg attornatum suum queritur quod predicti Iohannes Spicer Willemus et Iohannes Totham die martis proxima post festum Corporis Christi anno regnorum domini Regis nunc quarto simul et co. vi et armis scilicet gladiis arcubus et sagittis clausum ipsius Henrici apud Sandon fregerunt et bona et catalla videlicet pannos lineos et laneos vasa enea et lignea, lignum et focale ac alia domus utensilia ad valenciam et co. ibidem inventa ceperunt et asportaverunt et alia enormia et co. ad grave dampnum et co. Et contra pacem Regis et co. unde dicit quod deterioratus est et dampnum habet ad valenciam quadraginta librarum. Et inde producit sectam et co. Et predicti Iohannes Spicer Willelmus Berham et Johannes Totham per Thomam May attornatum suum veniunt et defendunt vim et iniuriam quando et co. Et dicunt quod ipsi in nullo sunt culpabilis de transgressionibus predictis prout predictus Henricus superius versus eos queritur. Et de hoc ponent se super patriam. Et predictus Henricus similiter. Text (English translation)Essex. John Spicer of Chelmesford, William Berham of Chelmsford, spicer, and John Totham were attached to answer Henry de Grey of Wilton, knight, in his plea that he together with William Borell of Writtle, John atte Stone, William Hunte of Writtle, John Mayesbery and Nicholas Bygge of Writtle with force and arms broke the close of the said Henry at Sandon and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £20, and they committed other enormities to the great damage of the said Henry and against the peace of the king. And therefore the same Henry by John Corbrigg, his attorney, impleaded that the said John Spicer, William, and John Totham on Tuesday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (18 June 1381) together et co. with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close of the said Henry at Sandon and took and carried away his goods and chattels, namely linen and woollen cloths, brass and wooden vessels and timber and firewood and other domestic utensils found there worth etc. and other enormities etc. to the great damage etc. And against the king's peace etc. Therefore he said he suffered loss and had damage worth £40. And therefore he brings this suit etc. And the said John Spicer, William Berham and John Totham by Thomas May, their attorney, came. And they defend the force and injury whenever (it behoves them) etc. And they say that they are not guilty of the aforesaid trespasses of which the said Henry has accused them. And they place themselves upon the country. And the aforesaid Henry similarly. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make them appear at Easter in quindene... and xii (jurors) etc. ...
