Text (English translation)Essex. John Stevene of Heybridge by Thomas May his attorney, plaintiff, appears against Richard Bertelot of Heybridge, defendant, on a plea that with force and arms he assaulted the said John at Heybridge and beat, wounded and badly handled him, and that he burnt charters, deeds and rolls found there. And other enormities etc. And against the peace etc. And he [the defendant] does not come. Sheriff had been ordered to attach him. And sheriff returns that they have nothing [by which they can be distrained] etc. Sheriff ordered to arrest him to appear in the quindene of Michaelmas.
