Text (English translation)m. 8d Chesterton. It was presented that John Trippelowe, cutler, with many other wrongdoers, rose up against his allegiance and the king's peace in the town of Cambridge on Sunday 16th June 1381, and that he was one of the leaders in the attack on the Prior of Barnwell and his close, and in coercing the mayor of Cambridge, Edmund Redmedwe, to make proclamations against the law and customs of the realm, and supporting everything done against the said Prior and his home. And that the same John on the preceding Saturday and on the following Monday and Tuesday was an aider and abettor in the insurrection, and in this way inciting the people in prejudice of the king. And it is ordered to the sheriff, namely Henry Englissh, that the aforesaid John should be arrested at once, and should not be left at liberty. And on this matter the aforesaid justices returned from Chesterton to Cambridge. And the aforesaid John Trippelowe placed himself to be accused, as it is approved by the reports of very many, and came before the aforesaid justices freely and gave himself up to stand lawfully according to the laws and customs of the realm of England, and he was committed to prison, namely Cambridge castle, staying there under custody of the said sheriff. And afterwards, namely on Tuesday 23rd July 1381, the aforesaid justices came to Cambridge castle. And the aforesaid John came before them, led by the sheriff. And he was asked how he wished to answer to the charges, and he said that he was not guilty, and placed himself upon his country for good or ill. And a proclamation was made on behalf of the king as necessary, and no-one appears. And the aforesaid jury say upon their oath that he is not guilty. Therefore by consideration of the aforesaid justices it is decided that John should go acquitted. And pledges come for his good behaviour: John Org[...], Ronald Vygar, William de Burton and John Wenderet. And he is sworn to the peace. It was also presented that Simon Bentilowe of Cambridge was a rebel and a leader of the evil company who coerced the mayor of Cambridge, Edmund Redmedwe, into making a proclamation against the Prior of Barnwell, and aided in the attack on the said Prior and his home at the time of the insurrection and disturbance, and oversaw many wrongdoings in the said town, perpetrated against his allegiance, in prejudice of the king and [...] office of the aforesaid mayor. And he was arrested by the sheriff, and committed to prison in Cambridge castle. And afterwards on Tuesday 23rd July 1381 the aforesaid [Simon] otherwise came before the justices at Cambridge, led by the sheriff, and was questioned as to how he wished to plead, and he said that he was not guilty, and placed himself upon his country for good or ill. And on this matter a jury was called for the king, and a proclamation made as necessary, and no-one appeared. And the aforesaid jury said that he was not guilty. Therefore by the judgement of the aforesaid justices he went acquitted. And pledges came for his good behaviour regarding the king and people: John Westdent, John Berle, draper, John [...] and John Harvy of Chesterton. And he was sworn etc. Hundred of Chesterton. Also the jury say upon their oath that John Beverach and John Stryk, together with others rising up on Sunday 9th June 1381 at Cottenham, took and sold a horse, two sheep and wool worth 100 s. belonging to Roger Harlaston at Cottenham, against their allegiance. And they have not been arrested, therefore the sheriff of Cambridge is ordered to arrest them. Wetherley. The jury say that Robert Petycunte of Royston, Walter Aleyn of Haslingfeld and Thomas West treasonably rose up with many others against their allegiance, and on Sunday 16th June 1381 feloniously burnt and destroyed the houses and buildings of William Bateman at his manor of Harlton, and feloniously stole his goods and chattels to the value of 100 s. namely, linen and woollen cloth and other domestic utensils. They have not been arrested, but withdrew themselves on the aforesaid occasion. Therefore it is ordered that they be arrested. The aforesaid jury also present that William Moigne of Abington Pigotts is similarly guilty of the articles above, and that throughout the time of the insurrection he was a follower of John Hanchach, chief rebel [...] in the county of Cambridge. And he has not been arrested, therefore the sheriff was ordered to arrest him, and that he should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to respond to the crimes for which he is indicted. On which day the sheriff returns that he was not found within his jurisdiction. And he does not appear. Therefore the sheriff of Cambridge was ordered to issue a writ of exigent against him from county to county according to the laws and customs, and that he should be outlawed unless he appears, and that he should appear in court before the aforesaid justices at Cambridge on Wednesday 9th January 1382 to respond to the king separately on the charges.
