Text (English translation)m. 6 Cambridge. Pleas held on Monday 22nd July 1381 before Hugh la Zouch and his associates assigned by the king to punish and chastise those who rose up and disturbed the peace in the county of Cambridgeshire. Cambridge. John Giboun of Cambridge, junior, was arrested on suspicion of being a notorious rebel and wrongdoer in town and country at the time of the disturbance and rumour. And afterwards by various inquisitions in a legitimate fashion it was found that the same John, along with other wrongdoers assembled with him, on Sunday 16th June 1381 during parish mass, entered the parish church of St. Mary, Cambridge, and feloniously broke a chest full of jewels and utensils, and took 10 s. from John Giboun senior to surrender that chest, to the prejudice of the king, and disturbance of the priest celebrating mass, and the parishioners in the church. And that the same John on the aforesaid day along with others as above feloniously entered the close of the Friars Carmelite at Cambridge, and there broke open a chest with jewels and books inside it, and took those goods away, the value of which is unknown but estimated to be £20, to the prejudice of Holy Church. And that the same John along with others was one of the rebels against the mayor of Cambridge, namely Edmund Litster, and was a common wrongdoer in town and country, in prejudice of the king at the aforesaid time, and especially against the Prior of Barnwell. And that on the same Sunday he rode to Steeple Morden, to the manor of Thomas Hasilden, with a 160 horsemen of evil society, gathered together in order to pull down the buildings of the said manor, and to perpetrate depredations and other evil deeds, and that he encouraged the wrongdoers in the evil deeds which were done there, namely, the theft of goods and chattels and the destruction of buildings, to the damage of £1000, to the prejudice of the king and manifest disturbance of the people. And that the same John was a constant maintainer of various wrongdoers gathered together in prejudice of the King at the said time, in various places in the aforesaid county. And the aforesaid John on this Friday was brought before the justices by the sheriff and examined on the charges. And among other things he acknowledged that he was in the fields of [Steeple] Morden with other men on the aforesaid day when the aforesaid wrongs were perpetrated, but he said that he was not guilty of breaking open the chest nor of rebelling against the mayor, just as is ascertained above and has been inquired into. And on this it is inquired of the aforesaid John if he was present at the time of the breaking of the aforesaid chest or not, and he did not respond. And because it is considered by the aforesaid justices to be well known and ascertained by various inquisitions that [John] is guilty of the charges and other wrongdoings. And on this, having considered the charges and the testimony of John Giboun senior and other trustworthy men sworn to this purpose and required to speak the truth by their oath, all are testified to be true as is ascertained above. And therefore, having consideration of the insurrection and prejudice and sacrilege committed against the Holy Church, and as above is testified and ascertained in various legitimate ways, it is judged by the aforesaid justices that he should be drawn and hanged. And that his lands and tenements, goods and chattels should be forfeit to the king. And it is ordered to the escheator, namely, Ralph atte Wyk, to diligently inquire into them and make execution on behalf of the king, which he immediately did and responded to the king. (Drawn and hanged, forfeit). Papworth and Stowe. The inquisition of the hundreds of Stowe and Papworth say upon their oath that John Haukyn of Gidding, along with others, was a raiser of conventicles at Swaffham and Fen Drayton, and led these conventicles to Fenstanton in Huntingdonshire. Also that Lorkyn Bernard, along with others, was a raiser of the people at Milton who damaged the tenements of Roger de Harlaston there. Also they say that Simon Iryssh dwelling in Waterbeach, Almaric Fede, and William Smyth of Waterbeach were raisers and leaders of the people who damaged the tenements of Roger de Harlaston at Denny Abbey. Another inquisition said that William Bokenham of Ickleton, on Monday 17th June 1381 broke into the close of William Croyser at Duxford and feloniously burnt the court rolls and other muniments of his manor found there. And that William Gore and John Clerk of West Wratting on Saturday 15th June 1381 feloniously pulled down the houses of Thomas de Swaffham at Burwell, and stole goods and chattels worth 40 s. And they say that John Wallingford of Weston Colville and William Smythe of Bradley feloniously broke into and pulled down the houses of Roger Harlaston at Cambridge on the aforesaid day. And that Richard Boch of Stetchworth and John Everard of the same were common rebels and wrongdoers throughout the whole time of the rumour and disturbance. And that Thomas Tourvey on the same day during the time of the aforesaid rumour broke into the close of Thomas Swaffham at Reach, and seized and sold his barley and other goods, of the value of which is unknown. And that John Bywold of West Wickham on the same day during the time of the aforesaid rumour broke the close of Henry Englyssh at Woodditton and took and drove away seven calves. And on this matter it is ordered to the sheriff to arrest the aforesaid John Haukyn, Lorkyn Bernard, Simon Irissh, Almaric Fede, William Smith of Waterbeach, William Bokenham, William Gore, John Clerk of West Wratting, John Wallingford, Richard Boch, John Everard, Thomas Turvey and John Bywold and bring them before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to answer to the charges. On which day the sheriff returns that Haukyn and all those named above were not found in his jurisdiction, but that they had fled before their recovery was ordered on the occasion of the aforesaid felonies. And other trustworthy men, sworn to this purpose, testify that this is the case, and that they should return and render themselves to the peace, and they do not appear. Thus by the judgment of the aforesaid justices their goods and chattels, lands and tenements are forfeit to the king, and it is ordered to the escheator to carry this out on behalf of the king. And it is ordered to the sheriff as before to arrest the aforesaid John Haukyn and all those indicted above, and that they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Thursday 19th September 1381 to respond separately to the charges. And that in the meantime the sheriff should inquire diligently into the lands, tenements, goods and chattels that those indicted aforesaid hold jointly or severally, and seize them into the king's hand, as was plainly certified at the previous term. On which Thursday the sheriff returns that the aforesaid John Haukyn and all others indicted were not found in his jurisdiction after their recovery was ordered. Therefore in the inquiry into and seizing of their lands, tenements, goods and chattels as ordered above, it is returned that Ralph atte Wyk, king's escheator, before their recovery was ordered, seized the same under supervision of and counter-rolled by Simon de Burgh by virtue [more on roll 6 d.]
