Text (English translation)m. 4d Continuation of the above [see m. 4, Incident 3543] And they do not appear. Therefore their goods and chattels and lands and tenements are forfeit, and it is ordered to the king's escheator to carry this out. And it is ordered to the sheriff as before to arrest them, and they should appear at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to respond separately to the charges. And that in the meantime the sheriff should inquire diligently into the manner in which the said escheator carries out the forfeiture of their possessions and it should be plainly certified before the justices on the aforesaid day. On which day the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Geoffrey Cobbe, John Prat, Robert Wryghte of Baldock, Thomas Godemar of Royston, John Poonde of Therfield, John Jankyn and John Peper were not found in his jurisdiction after their recovery was ordered. Therefore in the inquiry into and seizing of their lands, tenements, goods and chattels as ordered above, it is returned that Ralph atte Wyk, king's escheator carried this out under supervision of and counter-rolled by Simon de Burgh by the king's writ. And nothing further has been done on this at the time of the writ, and the aforesaid Geoffrey and others indicted above are summoned and do not appear. Thus it is ordered to the sheriff that writs of exigent and capias be issued against them from county to county and they are to be outlawed unless they can be seized. And they should appear in court before the aforesaid assigned at Cambridge on Wednesday 9th January 1382 to respond to the king separately on the charges. And the aforesaid sheriff has a writ of exigent at this time. Pleas held at Cambridge on Monday 8th July 1381. Cambridge. Inquisition taken on the oath of John Marchal, John Giboun senior, John Smyth of Barnwell, John Norton, Simon Glovere, Henry atte Feld, Thomas Caldecote, Ralph de Whatton, Roger Barbour, Bartholomew Chaundeler, Adam Lollewurth, John Hadelee, Robert Cokesford, and John Berle, draper, who say upon their oath that Simon Hosiere and Thomas Forbyssher were insurgents with John Hanchach, their leader, on the night of Sunday 16th June 1381 at Cambridge, and they broke into and tore down the house of William Bedel, against the king's peace. And they say that John Russell was also a common destroyer of the house of William Bedel against the peace. And they say that Richard Martyn was also a common and notorious leader of various men whose names are unknown in the committing of wrongdoing. And they say that John Fulburn', skinner, was a common rebel and wrongdoer. And that John Rifham on the aforesaid Sunday was a rebel and wrongdoer at the house of John Blankpayn in 'le Petycure' of Cambridge. And that Henry Riffham was a rebel and wrongdoer at John Blankpayn's house in 'le Market'. And that the aforesaid Simon Hosier and Thomas Forbysshor were the leaders of the group which did damage at the college of St. Benedict in Cambridge. And that William son of John Draper was likewise a common wrongdoer, and tore down the same houses. (He is indicted before the king). And that Robert Carter and others on the aforesaid Sunday broke into St. Mary's church, and sold a certain chest to John Giboun senior for 10 s. And that the said Robert, together with Thomas Forbyssher, broke open a certain chest in the church of the Blessed Mary of the Friars Carmelite of Cambridge, on the same Sunday, against the peace. And that Hugh Candelesby was a common wrongdoer on the aforesaid Sunday at the house of Roger Harlaston, and sold his malt and other goods, the value of which is unknown, to various men. And the same Hugh has been arrested and remains in prison. And that Robert Stokhale was a common wrongdoer at the house of the said Roger [Harlaston], against the king's peace, and that the same Robert has been arrested and remains in prison. And afterwards he was freed, as can be seen in the next roll. And they say that John Noreys, wright, Thomas Litster and John his son were wrongdoers at Cambridge at the tenement of Roger Harlaston on the aforesaid Sunday. Another inquisition taken on the same day, on the oath of Thomas Pipere, John Upwer, Hugh Whelwryghte, John Wattes, John Berlee, carter, John Colchester, John Taverner, John Cayle, Richard Hynton, William Purser, Nicholas Pottere, and Nicholas Potton, who say that on Saturday 15th June 1381 at about the tenth hour in the night, Richard Martyn, John Barbour, taverner, Simon Hosier, John Russell, [John Giboun junior, because he is dealt with elsewhere; crossed out], Thomas Forbysshor and John Deye of Willingham rose up with other wrongdoers and broke into the house of William Bedell of Cambridge, and plundered and carried off his goods and chattels. Also they say that Simon Hosier, and John Russell, with many other wrongdoers rose up and despoiled the Hospital of Corpus Christi in Cambridge, and carried away windows, doors and gates, and all other goods and chattels found in the said Hospital, namely, on Saturday 15th June 1381, at about 10 o'clock at night. And that the aforesaid Simon Hosiere, Thomas Furbisshour, John Russell, Richard Martyn, John Fulburn, skinner, John Riffham, Henry Riffham, William son of John Draper, Robert Cartere, John Peper, Thomas Letster, John his son, John Barbour, taverner and John Deye of Willingham were indicted, but did not appear. The sheriff was ordered to arrest them and that they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 3rd August 1381 to answer to the king on the charges. On which day the sheriff returns that the aforesaid John Barbour, taverner, was a merchant and had gone away from the town for merchandise as his profession required and not for any other reason, and was not arrested as he had not returned. And the sheriff returns that Simon Hosier and all the others indicted were not found in his jurisdiction, but they had fled and withdrawn themselves immediately after their recovery was ordered. And a proclamation is made that they should render themselves up to the king's peace, and they do not come. Thus it is ordered that their goods and chattels, lands and tenements should be forfeit, and the king's escheator should carry this out. And the sheriff is ordered to arrest them, and they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381, and in the meantime the sheriff is to inquire into their possessions and seize them into the hand of the king.
