Text (English translation)At the delivery at Colchester on Thursday before the feast of St Laurentius in the fifth year of the reign of Richard the Second [8th August 1381] before the said justices etc. Inquisition of the hundred of Dengie held on the aforesaid day and year at the delivery of Thomas Somery de Southminster, John But of the same, wright, Richard Bochier, Ralph atte Wode of Bradwell on Sea, John Page of Maldon, John Cloddere of Southminster, tailor, John Michel on the Hel in Steeple, John Rolf, smith of Southminster, and John Bray of Ockendon by oath of Walter Kyng, John Salman, John Pollard, John Porter, John Dette, Richard Bussh, John Hydeman junior, Adam Hervest, John Camside, John Hydeman senior, John Chapman, and Robert Dawe who say upon their oath that the aforesaid John Bray of Ockendon is guilty of that which he has been indicted. Judgement is therefore given by the aforesaid justices that the same John is to be drawn and hanged, moreover they say that the aforesaid John does have neither chattel, land nor tenement on the day he committed the aforesaid felonies, furthermore they say that all the aforesaid other accused are not guilty of that which they have been indicted and that none of them withdrew himself from suit. Judgement is therefore given by the same justices that they are quit. Inquisition of the hundred of Tendring held on the same day and year [8th August 1381] before the same justices upon the trial of John Taillour of Fordham, John Bowyer of Pleshey, and Robert Wodeham of Barking upon the oath of John Wombe, John Staunford, Edmund de la Mare, Edmund de Doune, Roger Crouch, Thomas Revel, John Flecham, John Speney of Thorp[-le-Soken], William Bret, John Crakebon of Maldon, Thomas Whot, and Henry Stompe who say upon their oath that the aforesaid John Taillor, John Bowyere, and Robert Wodeham are guilty of that which they have been indicted. Judgement is therefore given by the aforesaid justices that the same John, John and Robert are to be drawn and hanged, moreover they say that the aforesaid John, John and Robert do have neither chattel, land nor tenement on the day he committed the aforesaid felonies etc. Inquisition of the hundred of Lexden held on the same day and year before the same justices [8th August 1381] upon the trial of Waler Oxenhey of Elmstead, William Tassel, William Paynot, Hugo Fullere, Thomas Sweyn, and Henry Webbe upon the oath of Richard Stanstede, Robert Bakere of Coggeshall, Robert Graunger, John Cakeman, John Neve, John Cok of Aldham, John Reydale, Simon Paste Robert Sayer, John Prokenot, Simon Gnethe, Walter Symond who say upon their oath that the aforesaid Walter, Richard, William, Hugo, Thomas and Henry are not guilty of that which they have been indicted and that none of them withdrew himself from suit. Judgement is therefore given by the same justices that they are quit etc.
