Text (English translation)At a session held at Brentwood on Friday on the morrow of the feast of St Jacob the apostle in the fifth year of king Richard the Second [26th July 1381] before the same justices. Inquisition of the hundred of Chafford held there on the aforesaid day and year [26th July 1381] by the oath of Robert Sarich, Nicholas Hynde, Thomas Graunger, John Sprot, John Gille, John Taillour of Brentwood, Stephen Wright, Thomas Denys, Nicholas Hattere, John Laurence, Adam Arnelby, and John Longe who say upon their oath that William Rogger of South Ockendon was a chief leader of the evil company, and he rose up on Friday before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist last past [21st June 1381]] and came to the village of Aveley and by his proclamations he made the people of the district and the said village treasonably rising up etc. Also, the aforesaid jurors present that John Frost of Chipping Ongar (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar), who is also named John Webbe and John Frere, on Sunday on the fest of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [9th June 1381] treasonably rose up of his own free will with other enemies of the lord king at the aforesaid Chipping Ongar in order to kill divers lieges of the lord king, and that the same John on the following Monday [10th June 1381] together with other evil conventicles he has associated himself with, treasonably pulled down the manor of the prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem at Cressing Temple and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels of the said prior found there to the value of £ 40, and on the same day he feloniously broke into the house of John Sewale at Coggeshall and treasonably burned divers writs and other letters of the king which were there in the custody of the said John at Tuesday next [11th June 1381] in Chelmsford, and he assaulted the same sheriff at Coggeshall, tearing up his garments, so that he feared for his life, and that the same John on the same Tuesday with other enemies of the king treasonably entered the clause and house of Robert Rikdon at Witham imposed threats against the said Robert so that he made the same Robert thereafter rode against his will with the aforesaid enemies to Chelmsford to destroy divers lieges of the lord king etc.
