Text (English translation)At a session held at the Castle of Hadleigh 8th July [1381] in the fifth year of the reign of Richard the Second before the said justices. Rochford - Inquisition of the hundred of Rochford held on the same day and year by the oath of William Geir, John Lethenard, John Reed, John Pecche, William White, William Doilour, John Torold, John Pegor, John Ferrour, John Wynter, William Fynch, John Meep, Richard Kent, John Slephane, John Osebern, tailor, and John Bole who say upon their oath that Thomas Baker of Fobbing and William Geldebourn feloniously sent Robert Berdon of Orsett as their messenger to the village of Rayleigh on the Friday before the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [7th June 1381] to raise the people of the said town in rebellion against the peace of the king and thence feloniously made threats that they should do so under pain of death, mutilation and the burning of their houses. And they did likewise in each village of the said hundred so that the people of the district arose etc. Also, the same jurors present that on Wednesday after the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist [26th June 1381] John Maldon of Woodham Ferrers, herd (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar), feloniously came to the village of Rayleigh and made a proclamation to raise the people of the whole hundred aforesaid against the peace of the king in the aforesaid form and made threats in the aforesaid form so that the people of the locality rose up etc. Also, the same jurors present that John Grove of Langford feloniously on the Thursday following the aforesaid feast [27th June 1381] came to the village of Rochford and made a proclamation and threats to the people of the whole hundred aforesaid in the aforesaid form by which the people of the district rose up. Also, the same jurors present that on the same day [27th June 1381] John Kent of Horndon, Peter Spilman of the same and John Taillor of the same came to the village of Rayleigh and made a proclamation and threats to the people of the said hundred in the aforesaid form so that the people of the district rose up etc. They also present that William Sare of Prittlewell and John Messager of the same and Ralph Spicer of the same (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) on the aforesaid day and year [27th June 1381] went around the whole aforesaid hundred and made a proclamation and threats to the people of the said hundred to rise up in the said form so that the people of the locality rose up etc. They also present that John Bucke, carter, on the eve of Corpus Christi in the fifth year of the present king [12th June 1381] drove a certain cart to the villages of Great Wakering and Little Wakering and told the people of the said villages that Robert Hales was coming with 100 lances to kill all the people of the said hundred etc. They also present that Thomas Hilliston of Rochford (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) came to the village of Sutton on the Thursday after the feast of the Nativity of St Joh the Baptist in the fifth year of the present king [27th June 1381] and made a proclamation and threats to make the people of the said hundred and said village rising up in the said form. They also present that Peter White of Canewdon (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) came to the towns of Stambridge and Paglesham on the Sunday of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [9th June 1381] and made a proclamation and threats to the people of the said villages, that they should be at Witham on the following day to make a congregation there, and that a certain John Loftman came with Peter to the village of Paglesham and the things mentioned before are affirmed, but he did nothing else etc. They also present that John Frend of Horndon came to the villages of Rayleigh and Rochford and made proclamations and threats against the people of the said villagers to rise up in the aforesaid form etc. They also present that John Glasier of Rochford (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) made a proclamation and threats against the people of the whole hundred to rise in the aforesaid form etc. in this rumour etc. They also present that Gilbert atte Ree was a common malefactor and breaker of houses in this rumour and that at Witham on the Monday after the feast of the Holy Trinity [10th June 1381] he took from the chattels of Thomas Benyngton a cart strake worth 3d. and a cart rope worth 2d. and feloniously carried them away etc. They also present that Robert Berdon commanded John Deth of Canewdon (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) to summon all people of the village of Great Wakering to rise against the peace and he did this for fear of the said Robert. Upon this a certain John Cuchok, tailor, of the said village was assigned to keep watch for the king 's peace at South Shoebury [Shoeburyness] for fear of the enemies of the king and on his way he told the people of Little Shoebury [North Shoebury] about the things mentioned before, and they said that on Friday before the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [7th June 1381] the aforesaid Robert Berdon was a messenger of the evil company and voluntarily summoned the said villages as it is said above, and he arose with the evil company willingly etc. They also present that John Shoebury supplied Thomas Hilliston with a certain saddle to ride in this rumour etc. They also present that John Marchal of Rochford took at Coggeshall on Monday on the morrow of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fifth year [recte: fourth] of the present king [10th June 1381] two vests worth 4d. and one cap worth 2d. from John Sewale of Coggeshall and took them away against the peace. They also present that William Thurbarn came to the village of Paglesham to the manors of South Hall, East Hall and Church Hall and there received all the rolls and other muniments pertaining to the said manors and burnt them there by his own will etc. They also present that John Cartere also called Angry came to the manor of Wakering Hall in the village of Little Wakering and there burnt all the rolls and other muniments pertaining to the said manor against the peace. They also present that on Thursday before the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fifth year of the present king [20th June 1381] John Neuman of Rawreth came with force and arms to the dwelling-house of Thomas Tyrell at Downham and there threatened the said Thomas with death and mutilation and the burning of his houses until he made a fine with him of 8 marks which he feloniously took from him and carried away. Also, they present that Roger Baryngton, John Coupere, John Gyne, William Whateman, John Cok, John Smyth, William Smyth also called Gylmyn, Henry Fletcher and all those from the town of Rayleigh whose names are in a small schedule attached to the present roll burnt certain rolls and certain muniments pertaining to the market of the said town etc. Inquisition of the said hundred held on the same day [8th July 1381] and in the same place by the oaths of William Okelee, John Sprot, William Hamond, John atte Nasshe, Thomas Mathebrok John Berner John Huberd Stephen atte Hethe William Grey senior John Purdee Richard Tricere and Robert Plomer who say upon their oath that Robert Berdon and John Reynner of Orsett came to Canewdon and to various places in the aforesaid hundred on Sunday of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of king Richard [9th June 1381] and there proclaimed that they ought to rise up with the whole company otherwise they would be burned, and this they did feloniously and against the crown etc. They also present that John Wateyn junior on the said Sunday in the said year [9th June 1381] came to Burnham and Southminster and feloniously made all people in the said hundred rising up against their allegiance. They also present that Robert Andreu (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), sub-constable of the village of Canewdon, on the aforesaid day and year [9th June 1381], made all the people rise up with the evil company otherwise they would be burned etc. They also present that John Loftmayn junior (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) by order of Robert Andreu arose with all the evil company in various places of the said hundred in the said day and year [9th June 1381] and was their messenger from Canewdon to Paglesham to cause the people to rise up. They also present that Peter White of Canewdon (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) arose on the said day and year [9th June 1381] in a similar way and was their messenger from Canewdon to the village of Great Stambridge. Turn over for more presentments of the aforesaid hundred etc. Still the presentments of the aforesaid hundred upon the oath of the jurors as overleaf. Also, the same jurors present that two people from Witham hundred, one a mower [falcator] and the other one a tanner [tannator] came to Rochford on Thursday after Corpus Christi in the said year [20th June 1381] and there they said that the people of the hundred of Dengie had risen up and thus John Glasier (drawn) and Thomas Hilliston went around the whole hundred of Rochford and feloniously made the people rise up with the evil company. And that John Marchal of Rochford on Monday on the morrow of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the [...] year of the king [10th June 1381] took at Coggeshall chattel (which is not valued in the indictment) of John Sewall from the said John's house found there. They also present that Ralph Spicer of Prittlewell (drawn and hanged as appears in the calendar) on Thursday after Corpus Christi in the said year [20th June 1381] by night feloniously went around to various of his neighbours and said to them that unless they wished to rise up they ought to be burnt, and the same Ralph did this feloniously to rise the whole hundred etc. They also present that William Sare on Tuesday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year [11th June 1381] feloniously took 7 sheep worth 10s. from the flock of John de Gildesburgh at Fambridge Hall and feloniously drove them away and that he was a common malefactor in that evil company. They also present that John Neuman on Sunday of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [9th June 1381] at Wennington feloniously took 13 cows and 1 calf worth 100s. of John de Gildesburgh and feloniously carried them away and he was a common malefactor and a leader of the entire evil company. They also present that Robert Berdon of Orsett on Thursday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the aforesaid year [13th June 1381] came to the villages of Canewdon, Hockley and Rayleigh and threatened all the people of the said villages with death, mutilation and the burning of their houses unless they would rise up and make congregations against the peace of the king etc. They also present that Thomas Sprage of South Benfleet went on the said day [13th June 1381] to various places throughout the said hundred and made threats in a similar way. They also present that Ralph Spicer of Prittlewell (drawn and hanged as appears in the calendar), William Chaundeler of the same, William Sare of the same and John Messager on the same day and year [13th June 1381] went around the whole aforesaid hundred to make the people rising up in the aforesaid way. They also present that William Langnase of Northfleet in the county of Kent on Monday after Trinity [10th June 1381] feloniously broke the houses of the Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England at Cressing Temple, and that he was a great malefactor there etc. Inquisition of the said hundred held in the said place on the aforesaid day and year [8th July 1381] by the oath of William Spetel, John Clercus, John Milton, John Salman, John atte Strate, John Gerold, Richard Belle, John Pole, Ivo Redlye, John Cook, Richard Parot, Adam Hetheward, Thomas Smyth, Thomas Taillor, Thomas Burne, William Paperel, John Redhood, and William Clercus who say on their oaths that John Cukhok of Great Wakering, tailor, on the eve of Trinity in the said year [8th June 1381] delivered a message to the people of the village of Great Shoebury on behalf of the evil company that they should rise up and come with the commons under penalty of death of the destruction of their goods and houses. They also present that John Messager of Prittlewell and Thomas Hilliston of Rochford [Rocliffe] (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Thursday after Trinity in the said year [13th June 1381] delivered a message to the village of Great Shoebury on behalf of the evil company that they should rise up under the said penalties in the aforesaid form etc. They also present that John Glasier of Rochford (drawn and hanged as appears in the calendar) and John Hurt of Great Shoebury (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Thursday after Trinity in the said year [13th June 1381] delivered a message to the village of Great Shoebury on behalf of the evil company that they should rise up under the said penalties in the aforesaid form etc. They also present that Ralph Spicer of Prittlewell (drawn and hanged as appears in the calendar) was a common disturber of the peace and maintainer of malefactors in this rumour etc. They also present that William Chaundeler of Prittlewell, John Messager of the same and William Sare of the same were common disturbers of the peace and maintainers of malefactors in this rumour. They also present that John Chaundeler of Prittlewell (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) delivered a message to William Berland, knight, and John Prittlewell senior on behalf of the evil company that they should arise and come to meet with the commons of Kent at Rainham, and that the commons of Kent made John Chaundeler swear to do this against his will etc. They also present that John le Man of Great Shoebury (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) was one of those who on Tuesday after Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [11th June 1381] threw down the house of John of Gildesburgh at Fambridge. They also present that William son of John Neuman of Rawreth on Thursday after Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [13th June 1381] delivered a message to the village of Hadleigh on behalf of the evil company that they should rise up and come with the commons under penalties as above etc. They also present that John Frend of Horndon and Peter Cook of the same came and delivered a message to the village of Hadleigh on behalf of the evil company on Thursday before the feast of St Peter which is called Advincula [recte: Peter and Paul?] in the fifth year of the present king [27th June 1381?] that they should rise up and come with the commons under penalties as above etc. They also present that Thomas Sprage of Great Benfleet on Thursday after Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [13th June 1381] entered the mill of Hadleigh and feloniously broke open a certain chest found there and destroyed and burnt certain books of the king kept there etc. They also present that Thomas Treche of Leigh-on-Sea, John Glasier of Rochford (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) and John Messager of Prittlewell on Thursday before St Peter Advincula [recte: Peter and Paul?] in the fifth year of the present king [27th June 1381?] came and delivered a message on behalf of the evil company to the village of Rayleigh that they should rise up and come with the commons under penalties as above etc. They also present that Thomas Hilliston of Rochford (acquitted as shown in the calendar) delivered a message on the same day [27th June 1381?] to the village of Barling on behalf of the evil company that they should rise up and come with the commons under penalties as above etc. They also present that John Neuman of Rawreth was a common disturber of the peace and maintainer of malefactors in this rumour etc. They also present that the same John Neuman on Wednesday after Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [12th June 1381] feloniously entered the house of Thomas Tyrel, knight, at Downham and there feloniously took 8 marks of silver from Alice the wife of Thomas against her will. They also present that William Jobe of Barling (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) was a common malefactor and maintainer of malefactors in this rumour. They also present that Andrew Elyott of Leigh-on-Sea on Thursday after St Peter Advincula [recte: Peter and Paul?] in the fifth year of the present king [4th July 1381?] went to John Gerold and John Strate the constables of the village of Leigh-on-Sea and forced them by threats to rise up against their will etc. They also present that Andrew Coleman of Leigh-on-Sea (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) stirred up the town of Leigh-on-Sea and made it to rise up. They also present that John Mot of Southchurch (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) seized from the bailiff of Lady Alice de Neville the books concerning the village of Thorpe Bay [formerly Thorpe Neville in Southchurch] and destroyed and burnt them, namely on Sunday after Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [16th June 1381] etc.
