Text (English translation)Mainprise of divers men, taken on suspicion of being connected with the insurrection of the men of Kent and Essex, before Sir W. Waleworth, Mayor, and his fellows, Justices of the King by commission: 19 June 1381 19 June Ao 4 Ric. II [1381] came Henry Aleyn, Thomas Wircestre, baker, John Adam, tailor, and Richard Evesham and mainprised Walter West, smith, body for body that he would be faithful to the King and obedient to the officers of the King and the City, that he would keep the King's peace well and faithfully, and that he would neither make nor cause to be made any illegal covins or congregations, but would hinder such, if he knew of them, and if he could not prevent them he would inform the officers of the City of such as took place in the City, and the King's officers if they arose outside, under penalty of £100 payable to the King if he should be convicted of any breach of the above, which sum both he and his mainpernors severally agreed to pay, if etc. And further, the same Walter was sworn to fulfil the above conditions and to save his mainpernors harmless.
